South Africa dominated from the first ball in the opening match of the series. While conditions may be different at Old Trafford, England are struggling at the moment. My best bet is for the Proteas to secure a series win.

After losing the ODI series against India 2-1, Jos Buttler’s charges would have hoped for a good start against South Africa. Unfortunately they suffered a defeat and are now under major pressure to level up.

Bowling first England struggled from the outset. Liam Livingstone took 2-30 but none of the bowlers were particularly impressive as South Africa piled on 333 runs in 50 overs.

England have become known for their impressive run chases, and they got off to a decent start with a 102-run opening sand. Joe Root top scored with 86 runs but while the top three all scored 40+, no one else managed more than 18 runs as England were all out for 271 runs.

Ben Stokes has now officially retired from the ODI format after the opening match. That leaves a gaping hole in the middle order, the second after Eoin Morgan’s retirement a few weeks back.

South Africa Form

Despite struggling in the ODI format recently, South Africa have caught England at a good time. They are in a transitional period which the visitors need to take advantage of to gain automatic qualification to the World Cup.

Batting first at Chester-le-Street the Proteas piled on the runs. Janneman Malan scored 57 runs but the start of the show was Rassie van der Dussen who smashed 134 runs off 117. Aiden Markram contributed an impressive 77 off 61 balls.

The 333 total was big but England are known for chasing big scores. Anrich Nortje however had other ideas, taking 4-53 to restrict England to 277 all out.

South Africa are not likely to make any changes to their side after a comprehensive win in the 1st ODI.
