Pakistan vs Sri Lanka ODI Predictions - Shaheen to star as Pakistan win five in a row

Editor
Last updated: 2 hours ago

Pakistan, riding a four-match winning streak and already qualified for the tri-series final, face Sri Lanka, who are bolstered by a record ODI chase against England. Pakistan's combination of home advantage, a potent bowling attack led by Shaheen Shah Afridi, and recent lower-order heroics suggest an edge over Sri Lanka. The preview singles out key in-form batsmen – Salman Ali Agha and Shadab Khan for Pakistan, with Pavan Rathnayake and Dasun Shanaka for Sri Lanka. Pakistan are favoured to win, though Sri Lanka still have qualification hopes and will field their strongest side.

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka Predictions

Pakistan have momentum, home advantage and a bowling attack that has repeatedly created early damage for both of their opponents, while their recent one-wicket win over England highlighted their lower-order resilience.

  • Pakistan's Salman Ali Agha scored 107 off 90 balls vs Sri Lanka in the 1st ODI.
  • Pakistan's Shadab Khan hit 113* off 96 balls vs England on Sunday.
  • Pakistan's Shaheen Shah Afridi captured 4/46 vs England in Lahore.
  • Sri Lanka's Pavan Rathnayake scored 130 off 106 balls in the 430-run chase.
  • Sri Lanka's Dasun Shanaka scored 97 off 50 balls against England.
  • Sri Lanka's Dunith Wellalage took 2/56 in the win over England.

Head-to-Head

Pakistan have won their last five ODIs against Sri Lanka, including a 37-run victory in the tri-series opener when Pakistan made 305 and dismissed Sri Lanka for 268.

Pakistan Form

Pakistan are on a four-match winning streak and are the favourites to lift the tri-series crown on the weekend.

They kicked off their campaign by beating Sri Lanka by 37 runs before downing England by 87 runs. They then pulled off a remarkable one-wicket win in Lahore after slipping to 154/9 in search of 242 for the win.

Shadab Khan's unbeaten century took them over the line after Shaheen Shah Afridi had picked up 4/46 (econ 5.30). Khan hit five sixes and 13 fours in scoring 113* off 96 balls.

Sri Lanka Form

Sri Lanka lost the tournament opener to Pakistan by 37 runs but rebounded by pulling off one of the all-time greatest ODI run chases against England.

England posted a monster score of 429/4 at over 8.5 runs to the over, with Dunith Wellalage (2/56, econ 5.60) the pick of their bowlers.

Avishka Fernando (97 off 83) and Pavan Rathnayake (130 off 106) powered Sri Lanka to 190/2 after 27 overs. Dasun Shanaka (97 off 50) and Janith Liyanage (61 off 27) kept the chase alive as Sri Lanka powered their way to a two-wicket win with one ball to spare.

Team News and Possible XIs

Pakistan have already qualified for the final so they are likely to rotate their squad to keep players fresh. Sri Lanka still have qualification work to do and are likely to keep their strongest available batting core as they look to repeat their brilliant result against England.

Pakistan possible XI: Saim Ayub, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, Saad Baig (wk), Hasan Nawaz, Sal-man Ali Agha, Shadab Khan, Arafat Minhas, Shaheen Shah Afridi (c), Haris Rauf, Razaullah.

Sri Lanka possible XI: Avishka Fernando, Kamindu Mendis, Kusal Mendis (c/wk), Pavan Rathnayake, Dasun Shanaka, Janith Liyanage, Sahan Arachchige, Dunith Wellalage, Asitha Fernando, Eshan Malinga, Dilshan Madushanka.

Verdict

Pakistan are backed to win against a Sri Lanka that will be buoyed by their incredible win over England.

Salman and Shadab are the form batting options while Shaheen is bowling at his devastating best. Pavan Rathnayake and Dasun Shanaka carry Sri Lanka's best recent batting form.
