Record R10-million player ceiling broken twice at SA20 auction

Early on Aiden Markram made the big news when the bidding war for his services ended on a staggering R14m, a record bid for the SA20.

It wasn’t long before that record was smashed by South Africa’s new batting star, Dewald Brevis - Pretoria Capitals snapped him up for a record R16.5m, and judging by recent form that could be a key acquisition.

A short while later Proteas all-rounder Wiaan Mulder was also the subject of some heated bidding that ended with Joburg Super Kings securing his services for R9m!

Franchises pay big for quality players

A string of Proteas went for over R5-million, with MICT spending half their auction budget on securing T20 hitman Rassie van der Dussen. Sunrisers Eastern Cape pushed hard for in-form Matthew Breetzke (R6.1m) and speedster Anrich Nortje (R5m), in addition hauling in Quinton de Kock for a snip at R2.4m.

Joburg Super Kings secured Nandre Burger (R6.3m), the Paarl Royals nailed down Ottneil Baartman (R5.1m) and Durban’s Super Giants hauled in the fiery Gerald Coetzee (7.4m).

Late bids see franchises snap up quality players cheap

Wristspinner Nqaba Peter was nabbed by the Royals late in the day for R500k, while the Joburg Super Kings snapped up England's Reece Topley for a million, Imran Tahir for just R500k and Rilee Rossouw for R500k.

A late flurry of bids saw David Wiese secured by DSG for R1.3m, while MICT snapped up Tabraiz Shamsi for R500k, which could turn out to be a major scoop for the defending champs.

Some big names unsold include Proteas' skipper Temba Bavuma and all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo, in addition to the batting star of this year's The Hundred in England, Jordan Cox, England stars Jimmy Anderson and Moeen Ali, and Sri Lankan ace Kusal Perera.
