Australia vs Ireland T20 Cricket World Cup Predictions - Stoinis to savage the plucky Irish attack

Last updated: 2 hours ago

Australia is poised to bounce back in the T20 World Cup clash against Ireland after a series of losses. Despite recent struggles, the presence of quality players like Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Marsh, and Adam Zampa gives them an edge. Ireland, though having some success in their recent games, faces a challenge against a determined Australian side. Key players such as Harry Tector and Barry McCarthy are pivotal for Ireland's performance. The game promises to be exciting as both teams vie for victory.

Australia vs Ireland Predictions

Australia have been struggling for wins and runs, but they have so many quality players in their line-up that I’m backing them to get back on track by handing the Ireland side a heavy defeat.

  • Australia’s Marcus Stoinis has a strike-rate of 146.5 in T20Is (1,361 runs).
  • Australia’s Mitchell Marsh has scored 37, 27, 88, 20 & 44 in his last 9 innings.
  • Ireland’s Harry Tector scored 96* off 56 balls against Italy.
  • Ireland’s Ross Adair has scored 39 & 34 in his last 3 innings.

Head-to-Head

Australia have beaten Ireland in both of the T20Is they have played against them.

Australia Form

Australia comes into the World Cup after losing back-to-back T20Is against India in a 2-1 series loss, followed by a 3-0 series defeat to Pakistan. Their warm-up match against the Netherlands was rained-off, so they will be eager to get back to winning ways.

Mitchell Marsh hasn’t enjoyed the rich vein of form he was in during the last two years, but he has been scoring consistently and is a real dangerman when he gets set. Cameron Green is scoring consistently (36, 35 and 22) and has the potential to be a match-winner with bat and ball. Matthew Short has five single-figure scores in his last 10 innings and a high score of just 52, but his strike-rate of 150.18 in T20Is could be a big benefit for the Australians.

Adam Zampa is one of Australia’s key players for this World Cup. The leggie has returned figures of 3/45, 3/25, 2/21 and 4/24 in his last eight matches. Ben Dwarshuis has been taking wickets regularly, with figures of 2/23, 3/26 and 2/39 in his last four games.

Ireland Form

Ireland won three of their last four T20Is ahead of the World Cup, only to lose their World Cup opener to Sri Lanka by 20 runs after a good performance with bat and ball.

Harry Tector has been in good form with the bat and he and Ross Adair looked like they were on track to chase down Sri Lanka’s target before both lost their wickets. Lorcan Tucker has scored between 20 and 41 five times in his last 10 knocks and will be eager to push on to bigger scores.

Barry McCarthy has been in superb form with the ball, taking 2/43, 2/26, 2/33 and 2/40 in his last five matches. Matthew Humphreys went wicketless against Sri Lanka but picked up 2/23, 3/26 and 1/24 in his previous three matches.

Australia vs Ireland Team News & Squads

Aussie skipper Mitchell Marsh has confirmed that the injury Tim David picked up in the Big Bash is still lingering and he won’t be in the side for Australia’s opening match of the T20 World Cup. “There have been some great games since the start of the World Cup, and that’s what you want. It’s been awesome to watch so far. We treat every team the same. We prepare the same way, do our homework, and then it’s about going out there and executing on the day. No matter who we’re playing, we have that mentality,” said Marsh.

Ireland captain Paul Stirling rued his side allowing Sri Lanka to pick up speed towards the end of their innings: “I felt they got 15 to 20 runs too many. At the start of the day we would have been happy chasing their score. but you could find 20 runs almost anywhere in the match. When the match was on the line we were not as clinical as we should have been and were a bit sloppy in the field. They defended well at the back end and upped the ante and put the squeeze on. Spin is going to be a challenge in the competition,” added Stirling.

Australia (possible XI): Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh (c), Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, Matt Renshaw, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Matt Kuhnemann, Adam Zampa.

Ireland (possible XI): Paul Stirling (c), Ross Adair, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Curtis Campher, Ben Calitz, George Dockrell, Gareth Delany, Mark Adair, Barry McCarthy, Matthew Humphreys.

Verdict

I am backing Australia to win. I am also backing Marcus Stoinis to top score for Australia.

Harry Tector is a good bet to top score for Ireland.
