The UAE’s first international match in India was in their World Cup opener against New Zealand in Chennai this week when they suffered a 10-wicket defeat. Canada put up a good fight against South Africa, but I was impressed by the UAE’s batters and I think they will outscore Canada in a match that will almost certainly decide who gets handed the wooden spoon.

Canada recovered from 45/4 to reach 114/4 after 14 overs thanks to a 65-run stand for the fifth wicket between Navneet Dhaliwal (64 off 49) and Harsh Thaker (33 off 29). They weren’t able to keep the rate going and ended their 20 overs on 156/8.

The United Arab Emirates slipped to their fourth defeat in a row when they lost their World Cup opener to New Zealand by 10 wickets.

The UAE put together an impressive batting performance to reach 173/6 off their 20 overs. Muhammad Waseem (66* off 45) and Alishan Sharafu (55 off 47) added 107 runs for the second wicket inside 15 overs, and the middle order scored at 10 runs to the over for the last five overs against tight New Zealand bowling.

The power pair of New Zealand openers stormed to a 10-wicket win off 15.2 overs as they overwhelmed the UAE attack. Haider Ali’s four overs went for just 27 runs (econ 6.75), while the rest of the attack all went for over 11.5 runs to the over.
