Australia take a 1-0 lead into the final game of the series so New Zealand know this is a must-win for them. On a unusually spinning pitch in the opening match, the Black Caps came up horribly short, but will hope for a more suitable wicket this time around.

Regardless, the Aussies just looked a level above the hosts in that opening game. This may be a bit tighter but I can’t see the Black Caps leveling the series.

Australia have won their last six Test matches against New Zealand. In the opening game of this series, Australia won by 172 runs.

New Zealand are usually quite dominant on home soil so they will be disappointed with their showing in the first Test. On a tough wicket, the visitors batted first and scored 383 runs, a total that should never have been that high.

New Zealand then lost their first five wickets with just 29 runs on the board. They recovered thanks to 71 by Glenn Phillips to 179 all out. A better bowling performance ensued as the Black Caps bowled the Aussies out for 164.

However, they gave up too big a lead in the first innings to make it a realistic target to chase 369. Rachin Ravindra top scored with 59 runs, but New Zealand were all out for 196.

Given the poor showing in the opening match, New Zealand may look to make changes. They certainly need more with the ball from some individuals.

Australia dominated the first Test from start to finish. On a tough wicket, Cameron Green batted superbly for his 174 runs. The next highest score was 40 as the Aussies were all out for 383.

That innings was, however, enough to set the match up for victory as Green’s showing ended up being the difference between the sides. Australia bowled the hosts out for 179 runs as Nathan Lyon picked up four wickets.

That lead proved enough as Australia were all out for 164 in their second innings, leaving New Zealand with a total of 369 to win.

Nathan Lyon again produced the goods on an uncharacteristic pitch in New Zealand. The off spinner took six wickets to complete his ten-for in the match.
