Birmingham Phoenix vs Sunrisers Leeds The Hundred Predictions - Sunrisers to send Phoenix packing

Editor
Last updated: 43 minutes ago

Sunrisers Leeds, in strong form with three recent wins, face a struggling Birmingham Phoenix who are bottom of the table with just one victory in The Hundred. Mitchell Marsh leads the charge for Leeds, while Joe Clarke stands out for Phoenix amid an otherwise weak campaign. The Edgbaston pitch is expected to favor strokeplay, and while Phoenix risk elimination with a loss, Leeds are tipped to win this key encounter, with Marsh and Clarke also likely to be the standout batters for their sides.

Head-to-Head

Sunrisers Leeds have won two and lost two of their last five matches in The Hundred against the Birmingham Phoenix.

Birmingham Phoenix Form

Birmingham Phoenix remain rooted to the bottom of the table after a difficult campaign, with one win and four defeats from their five matches.

Joe Clarke has been their leading run-scorer in The Hundred Men’s competition with 192 runs, while Ben Dwarshuis has been their most successful bowler with five wickets.

Phoenix come into this match after a seven-wicket defeat to the Trent Rockets. Batting first, they could only manage 111/6 from their 100 balls, with Mitchell Owen and Will Smeed again failing to make an impact at the top of the order.

Clarke was the one bright spot, playing some attractive strokes on his way to 63. However, he kept losing partners and the Phoenix were unable to build any real momentum. The Rockets bowlers maintained control throughout, leaving Birmingham with a below-par total.

Trent had few problems in the chase. Ben Duckett made a patient 22, while Finn Allen added 28 from 30 balls at the top. Sam Billings then finished things off quickly with 31 from just 19 deliveries as the Rockets reached the target comfortably with seven wickets in hand.

Sunrisers Leeds Form

Sunrisers Leeds are fifth on the points table with three wins and two defeats, and they arrive in strong form after a commanding 37-run win over the London Spirit.

Mitchell Marsh continues to lead their batting charts with 290 runs in the tournament, while Nathan Ellis has been their top wicket-taker with seven wickets.

Leeds produced a stunning batting display in their previous match, posting 241/2 from 100 balls. Marsh and Ryan Rickelton were outstanding at the top, putting the London Spirit attack under pressure from the start. Marsh struck 76 off 37 balls, while Rickelton smashed 94 from just 42 deliveries, hitting six fours and eight sixes.

Harry Brook then added even more late damage with a blistering 55 off only 18 balls, helping Leeds reach a huge total.

London Spirit’s chase started poorly as Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Jonny Bairstow both fell early. Liam Livingstone and Dewald Brevis played some strong attacking shots, but neither could stay long enough to shift the momentum fully.

James Coles and James Rew also fell cheaply, leaving too much for David Willey to do. Willey fought hard with 83, but Spirit still finished 37 runs short as Leeds completed an emphatic win.

Team news

The Edgbaston pitch should serve up a good contest for the batters and bowlers early on, although it should ease into a good strip for strokeplay in the later overs.

Birmingham Phoenix (possible XI): Will Smeed, Mitchell Owen, Joe Clarke, Rehan Ahmed, Laurie Evans, Donovan Ferreira (c), Sean Dickson, Ben Dwarshuis, Chris Wood, Saqib Mahmood, Usman Tariq.

Sunrisers Leeds (possible XI): Mitchell Marsh, Ryan Rickelton, Zak Crawley (c), Harry Brook, Dan Lawrence, Matthew Revis, Brydon Carse, Matthew Potts, Nathan Ellis, Reece Topley, Abrar Ahmed.

Verdict

Sunrisers Leeds are tipped strongly to win, with the on-fire Mitchell Marsh a good call to back to be the best Sunrisers batter. Joe Clarke has been the only consistent runscorer for the Phoenix, while Rehan Ahmed and Nathan Ellis are both backed to pick up two wickets or more.
