Last season the Pumas beat the Lions twice. In the first match the Pumas won 50-9 in Johannesburg while the last time they met the Pumas with winners by 45-10 at home.

The Pumas are the defending Currie Cup champions, something many thought we would never say. However, with the bigger sides fielding second string sides, this season is another opportunity for the Nelspruit side to make a name for themselves.

On the opening weekend the Pumas made the perfect start, beating the Blue Bulls 63-15 away from home. While the Bulls were nowhere near full strength, it was a clinical performance from the visitors and defending champions.

Lions Form

The Lions finished the 2022 Currie Cup at the bottom of the table. They were woeful throughout, winning just two of their 12 fixtures.

However, the Lions will once again struggle this season as they are playing in the URC at the same time. They will want to be more competitive that last season though.

In the opening round the Lions went down 44-28 at home to Western Province. The 16 point gap could however have been bigger but for some second half fight from the hosts.
