Japan vs Spain U20 Predictions - Spain to upset the odds and edge Japan in a tightly contested World Rugby U-20 Championship 13th-place play-off

Last updated: 2 hours ago

Japan and Spain U20 sides clash for the first time in the 13th-place playoff at the 2026 Junior World Championship. Both teams recently secured big wins—Japan over the USA and Spain over Uruguay—but overall tournament form has been shaky. While Japan are slight favorites, Spain’s more organized forward pack could make the difference in what is expected to be a close contest. The recommended bet is Spain to cover the +4.5 handicap spread based on their improved structure and recent performance.

Japan vs Spain U20 Predictions

Japan are slight favourites heading into this fixture to close out their tournament campaign. While both teams will expect a hard-fought contest, Spain's forward pack has looked more structured throughout the tournament, which could prove decisive in what is expected to be a close contest. My best bet is Spain to cover the +4.5 handicap.

  • Japan and Spain will be meeting for the first time.
  • Japan beat the USA 71-21 in the 13th-place semi-final.
  • Japan has won 1 of their last 5 matches.
  • Spain beat Uruguay 57-6 in the 13th-place semi-final.
  • Spain has won 1 of their last 5 matches.

Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between Japan and Spain.

Japan U20 Form

Japan defeated the USA 71-21 in the 13th-place semi-final in Georgia, after leading 28-14 at halftime. The dominant 50-point win secured Japan's advancement to the 13th-place playoff against Spain.

Japan dominated possession and ran in 11 tries scored by Rio Iwakura (3), Sota Miura (3), Shinnosuke Uchida (2), Isa Fukada, Kohaku Suda, and Keitatsu Motoyama.

Japan's only win in their last five matches has been against the USA.

Spain U20 Form

Spain defeated Uruguay 57-6 in the 13th-place semi-final at the AIA Arena in Georgia, after leading 19-6 at the break to book Spain's place in the 13th-place play-off against Japan.

Spain completely dominated after Uruguay scored the first two penalties, scoring nine tries through clinical attacking play against a struggling Uruguayan defence.

Oriol Marsinyac Garcia and Marcal Carreras Cuesta scored two tries apiece, while Malakai Hafoka Toca successfully converted 6 of Spain's 9 tries.

Spain's only win in their last five matches has been against Uruguay.

Spain's forward pack has looked more structured throughout the tournament, which could prove decisive in what is expected to be a close contest.

Verdict

Japan are slight favourites, however, Spain's forward pack has looked more structured throughout the tournament. My best bet is Spain to cover the +4.5 handicap.
