Samoa were once upon a time one of the stronger nations in rugby union, particularly around mid-table, however, they have slowly dropped off the pace over the last few years.

2025 has brough huge disappointment for the Samoans as they failed to get automatic qualification to the World Cup – something that is usually reasonably straightforward for them.

However, a poor run at the Pacific Nations Cup where they lost to Japan and Fiji, Samoa were forced into these Rugby World Cup playoffs to keep their hopes alive. Last week, Samoa started well, beating Brazil 48-10.

Namibia will be very disappointed to not have already sealed their World Cup, and this may well be the first World Cup in more than a decade that they are not attending.

Zimbabwe pipped Namibia in the Africa qualifiers, an upset very few, if any people saw coming. Going into this playoff finals pool, just behind Samoa, Namibia would have been favourite.

However, last weekend Namibia faltered, suffering a devastating 22-15 loss to Belgium in Dubai. That result leaves Namibia with no wiggle room as they now need to beat Samoa on Thursday to have any chance.
