Egypt vs Nigeria Predictions - Nigeria backed to finish third at AFCON

The upcoming AFCON semi-final match features Egypt against Nigeria, who showcase opposing styles of play. Egypt's focus on defense helped them navigate through the tournament, winning against teams like Ivory Coast despite minimal possession. However, they faltered in the semi-finals against Senegal. Nigeria, a sharp contrast, scored consistently in their games, driven by their offensive lineup, but were halted by Morocco in their recent match. The prediction leans towards a likely draw in regular time, with Nigeria potentially advancing in extra time or penalties.

  • Egypt relies on solid defense, reaching AFCON semi-finals through strategic play.
  • Nigeria boasts strong attack, won 5 consecutive AFCON matches scoring 2+ goals.
  • Match prediction: Nigeria to win in extra time or penalties after a 90-minute draw.

Egypt vs Nigeria Predictions

Egypt have not been at their best and very defensively focused, however, that approach got them to the semi-final. Nigeria, however, are the complete opposite, forward-thinking and score plenty of goals.

My best bet is for Nigeria to win this in either extra time or on penalties. A draw after 90.

Head to Head

In 19 matches, both teams have won six times with seven draws.

Egypt Form

Egypt have underwhelmed at the Africa Cup of Nations, narrowly beating Zimbabwe and South Africa in the group stage alongside a 0-0 draw against Angola.

Mohamed Salah scored in both of Pharaohs’ victories and netted again in a 3-1 extra time win over Benin.

Hossam Hassan’s side took their chances against Ivory Coast in the quarter-finals. Omar Marmoush and Salah scored in an entertaining 3-2 win as they ended with 29% possession and 6-13 shots.

Egypt’s luck ran out in the semi-finals where they lost 1-0 to Senegal. They defended deep and registered just 0.12 xG, conceding in the 78th minute and unable to find a way back.

Egypt Predicted Lineup

Egypt (3-4-3) Shobeir Oufa; Yasser Ibrahim, Khaled Sobhi, Ramy Rabia; Mohamed Hany, Marwan Attia, Hamdy Fathy, Trezeguet; Mohamed Salah, Omar Marmoush, Zizo

Mohamed Hamdy suffered an ACL rupture against Benin with Ahmed Abou El Fotouh to continue at left-back.

Hassan could use this opportunity to rotate his squad. Hossam Abdelmaguid is suspended.

Nigeria Form

Nigeria won their first five matches at AFCON, scoring 2+ goals in each victory. They conceded in every group stage game but still managed to get it done, Ademola Lookman leading the way with two goals and two assists.

Confidence was high after Eric Chelle’s side thrashed Mozambique 4-0 in Fez. They had 2.82-0.10 xG with their front three on fire, Lookman and Akor Adams scoring twice and Victor Osimhen bagging a brace.

Osimhen opened the scoring against Algeria in the quarter-finals as Nigeria eased to a 2-0 victory. Adams found the net again as they ended with 3.36-0.13 xG.

The Super Eagles met their match in the semi-finals where they were completely shut down by Morocco. They could only manage two shots in 120 minutes of action, the game ending 0-0 before losing the penalty shootout.

Nigeria Predicted Lineup

Nigeria (4-2-3-1) Francis Uzoho; Ryan Alebiosu, Chidozie Awaziem, Calvin Bassey, Zaidu Sanusi; Frank Onyeka, Wilfred Ndidi; Samuel Chukwueze, Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon; Paul Onuachu

Wilfred Ndidi available after suspension and should replace Raphael Onyedika in midfield.

With Victor Osimhen doubtful, Chelle will surely make changes here with Francis Uzoho, Ryan Alebiosu, Chidozie Awaziem, Zaidu Sanusi, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon and Paul Onuachu all hoping to start.

Verdict

I am backing this match to end in a draw after 90 minutes.
