Liverpool have a 63-31 advantage against Southampton in 94 meetings with 120 draws. The Reds beat the Saints 3-2 in November.

Southampton Form

Two of Southampton’s three wins during the 2024/25 campaign came in the previous rounds of the EFL Cup. The Premier League side defeated Cardiff 5-3 and Stoke 3-2.

The Saints beat Everton 1-0 after the Stoke victory but then lost five of their following six, leading to Russell Martin’s sacking. Southampton conceded 17 during this run and let in 12 at St Mary’s.

Martin’s dismissal followed a 5-0 home defeat against Tottenham. The South Coast outfit trailed 4-0 after just 24 minutes and shipped a fifth just after half time.

Southampton Injuries & News

Captain and defender Jack Stephens is suspended.

Midfield duo Juan Larios and Will Smallbone are injured and unavailable here.

Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu and striker Ross Stewart have long-term injuries and are ruled out.

Liverpool Form

Liverpool remain unbeaten in 19 consecutive matches in all competitions, winning 16. They also secured EFL Cup wins over West Ham 5-1 and Brighton 3-2 during this lengthy unbeaten run.

The Reds had won seven in a row and scored 18 before a 3-3 draw at Newcastle. Arne Slot’s side hit back with a 1-0 win at Girona in the Champions League.

The Merseyside club preserved their unbeaten run by coming back twice in a 2-2 draw against Fulham. Cody Gakpo scored and a late Diogo Jota leveller helped Liverpool to stay at the top of the Premier League table.

Liverpool Injuries & News

Full-back Andy Roberston and midfielder Alexis MacAllister are suspended and won’t make the squad on Wednesday.

Defensive trio Conor Bradley, Konstantinos Tsimikas and Ibrahima Konate are sidelined due to injury.

Verdict

Southampton v Liverpool

It's difficult to see managerless Southampton hitting back against a ruthless Liverpool in the EFL Cup. A high-scoring away win is the best bet in this quarter-final clash.
