Germany vs Slovakia

With both sides on 12 points ahead of their last match in the group, it’s a shootout for an automatic qualifying spot in the World Cup. Germany holds the advantage with a superior goal difference (three better than Slovakia), so Slovakia need to do the heavy lifting in this tie. Slovakia have four clean sheets from their five matches and produced a superb performance to beat Germany 2-0 at home in their earlier meeting in the group stages. It will be harder to beat Germany (who just need a draw), but with nothing to lose I’m backing Slovakia to create another upset.

Malta vs Poland

This is a match which will make no difference to either team, as Malta are way out of the running after losing four of their seven matches. As for Poland, they are guaranteed second place but would need to beat Malta 13-0 to have an outside chance of taking top spot from the Netherlands. Poland have never lost to Malta and beat them 2-0 in their earlier group match. Poland have three wins and two draws from their last five matches, while Malta have lost two of their last three matches and have a goals ratio in qualifying of 2:16, so this should be a comfortable win for Poland.

Montenegro vs Croatia

Croatia have breezed through their group, with a lead of six points ahead of the final match after winning six and drawing one of their qualifying games. They have scored 23 goals and let in just two, while Montenegro have a goal difference of minus-8. Two of their three wins were against Gibraltar, who have lost seven out of seven matches in qualification. Croatia beat Montenegro 4-0 at home in their earlier group match, so I see a clear win to nil on the cards.

Northern Ireland vs Luxembourg

Nothing to play for but pride, as Luxembourg have lost all five of their matches in the group, while Northern Ireland are six points behind second-placed Slovakia. Northern Ireland have lost three of their last four games, but their two wins in their last five were an impressive 2-0 home win over Slovakia and a 3-1 away win over Luxembourg. There’s a chance either side might give match time to fringe players, but even so there’s little evidence to suggest anything other than a loss for Luxembourg.

Verdict

FIFA World Cup Qualifiers Europe

Slovakia to do the double over Germany, while Poland to end Malta’s miserable qualification journey.

Croatia to end qualification on a high, while Northern Ireland to play for pride by beating struggling Luxembourg.
