Portugal vs Nigeria Preview - Goals predicted in Portugal win over Super Eagles

Portugal and Nigeria face off in an intriguing international friendly. Portugal, in fine form ahead of the World Cup, recently thrashed Armenia and beat the US and Chile, showing attacking strength but some defensive flaws. Nigeria, despite missing out on the World Cup, have bounced back with a strong run in the Africa Cup of Nations and friendlies, consistently scoring. The key recommendation is 'Both Teams to Score' (BTTS), with Portugal tipped for a narrow 2-1 victory.

  • Portugal prep for World Cup with solid recent wins, but some defensive concern.
  • Nigeria missed the World Cup but have strong scoring form in recent matches.
  • Recommendation: Both teams to score, with Portugal slightly favored for a 2-1 win.

Portugal vs Nigeria Predictions

Nigeria are not going to the World Cup but have been in strong recent form. Portugal are also in great form but with the World Cup just days away, they are unlikely to take this too seriously. Expect goals as both teams go for it.

Portugal Won only Previous Encounter

In a friendly ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Portugal thrashed Nigeria 4-0. That was the only previous meetings.

Portugal look in Great form ahead of World Cup

Portugal crushed Armenia 9-1 in their final World Cup qualifier. Joao Neves and Bruno Fernandes netted hat-tricks in Porto where the result was never in doubt.

Roberto Martinez’s side met two World Cup co-hosts in March, beginning with a 0-0 draw against Mexico at Estadio Azteca.

Francisco Trincao and Joao Felix scored in a 2-0 victory over the United States in Atlanta where both teams registered under 0.75 xG.

The Selecao hosted Chile in Jamor on Saturday and came away with a 2-1 win. Goncalo Guedes and Bruno Fernandes scored after both teams had been reduced to 10 men, the clean sheet ruined in added time.

Nigeria Licking their Wounds

Nigeria failed to qualify for the World Cup despite getting a second chance in the playoffs. They met DR Congo in the final, the game ending 1-1 after extra time before a penalty shootout defeat.

The Super Eagles had a great start at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, winning five straight games to reach the semi-finals. They were outplayed by hosts Morocco, the contest going to another penalty shootout where they came up short.

Eric Chelle’s side are unbeaten in five friendlies since, scoring 2+ goals in each contest. They beat Zimbabwe and Jamaica before a 2-2 draw against Poland, Terem Moffi and Paul Onuachu with the goals in Warsaw.

Verdict

Portugal conceded against a very average Chile side and Nigeria are likely to offer more threat up front. BTTS is my best bet in Leiria where another 2-1 victory wouldn’t surprise.
