Mamelodi Sundowns 2024-25 Season Preview - Another League Title Expected From The New Coach
Mamelodi Sundowns have strategically bolstered their squad in the off-season with key signings like Iqraam Rayners and Arthur Sales. Under new coach Manqoba Mngqithi, the team has shifted to a 4-3-3 formation, focusing on faster ball circulation and a more attacking style of play. With high expectations for an eighth consecutive PSL title, the team aims for nothing less than first place in the league. Key players Ronwen Williams and Peter Shalulile are pivotal, though competition remains fierce.

Sundowns’ Transfer Business
The Champions have been more measured in their transfer dealings in the off-season. They’ve looked for players in their mid-twenties who are about to hit their peak.

Kegan Johannes was signed to boost the defensive options from SuperSport United. Brazilian striker Arthur Sales was signed from Lommel SK in Belgium and teenage left back Asekho Tiwani joined from Sekhukhune United.
The headline signing was Iqraam Rayners from Stellenbosch FC. Sundowns triggered the released clause in the speedy striker’s contract after he netted 15 league goals last term.
Some big names to depart were Bongani Zungu, Gaston Sirino and Abdelmounaim Boutouil. Head coach Rhulani Mokwena parted ways with the club too, as Manqoba Mngqithi takes over the reins.
Key Players for Mamelodi Sundowns
There are very few players who can’t be replaced at Sundowns, such is the astonishing depth at their disposal. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was recently nominated for the Yashin Award at the Ballon d’Or and is crucial for his shot-stopping and ball-playing abilities.
In midfield, Teboho Mokoena is the team’s battery and his absence is usually felt quite heavily. He also brings an ability to score goals from long range.
In attack, Peter Shalulile previously felt irreplaceable but the signings of Rayners and Arthur Sales up front means that the Namibian is no longer even a guaranteed starter!
Themba Zwane is still the most creative player at the club but after scoring just two goals last season, he is slowly being phased out of the starting XI due to his advancing years.
Analysis of Mamelodi Sundowns Tactics
New coach Manqoba Mngqithi has switched the formation from a midfield diamond to a 4-3-3 system. He prefers width to the side’s play whereas the previous coach liked a narrow setup.
Expect to see faster ball circulation this season and less easing off when leading by a couple of goals. Sundowns may look to drive home the advantage more often and win by 4+ goals in several fixtures.
Realistic Expectations for the 2024-25 Season
In the league, everyone expects Sundowns to win an eighth title in a row. Finishing second would be a disaster and would lead to many heads rolling.
We can expect to see a more attacking brand of football with more crosses and more goals to enjoy.
Predicted Mamelodi Sundowns Finish
Anything less than winning the PSL title would be seen as an epic failure.
Our prediction is for Mamelodi Sundowns to finish first in the PSL once again.
