West Indies Form

The West Indies enjoyed a great start to the five-match ODI series at home by beating New Zealand by seven wickets with seven balls in the bank.

Vitel Lawes bowled superbly on his ODI debut, knocking over three of New Zealand’s top six batters in returning figures of 3/54 (econ 5.40). Alzarri Joseph (4/41) ran through the lower order while Gudakesh Motie picked up 2/51 as New Zealand were bowled out for 267 with one ball to spare.

Keacy Carty was named Player of the Match for his superb 95 off 112 balls to take the West Indies to 268/3 off 48.5 overs to secure the win. Carty added 131 for the third wicket with Shai Hope, who scored 87* off 92 balls. Hope has scored 497 runs in his last 10 ODIs at an average of 99.4

New Zealand Form

New Zealand came back to earth with a thud after their successful tour of England, losing to the West Indies in the 1st ODI by seven wickets.

New Zealand got off to a strong start but struggled to up the run rate through their innings. Their top seven all made it into the 20s, but only Will Young (49 off 63) and Daryl Mitchell (65 off 73) kicked-on to more substantial scores.

The New Zealand bowlers did their best to contain the West Indies, but they needed to have set their hosts another 20-30 runs to have been competitive on that pitch. Nathan Smith (0/32, econ 4.57), Matthew Fisher (0/51, econ 5.18) and Mitchell Santner (0/42, econ 4.20) were the most economical of the New Zealand bowlers.
