England vs Scotland T20 Cricket World Cup Predictions - Salt to smash the Scottish attack

Editor
Last updated: 1 hour ago

In a pivotal T20 World Cup encounter, England faces Scotland amid a challenging campaign. England, on the brink of elimination, draws confidence from their experienced lineup, especially with players like Phil Salt and Jacob Bethell in form. Scotland, with dynamic batsmen like George Munsey and Brandon McMullen, also anticipates a strong performance. The sole prior T20I meeting between these teams ended prematurely due to rain. England is predicted to edge out Scotland and secure their second win to stay alive in the tournament.

England vs Scotland Predictions

England’s start to the World Cup has been rocky and they’re skirting with elimination. Scotland will be confident of their chances coming into this match, but I’m backing the battle-hardened English squad to pick up their second win of the tournament.

  • England’s Phil Salt scored 30 off 14 balls against the West Indies.
  • England’s Jacob Bethell has scored 55 & 33 in his last 2 innings.
  • Scotland’s George Munsey (2,405 runs, ave 31.54) has a strike-rate of 144.44 in T20Is.
  • Scotland’s Brandon McMullen has scored 20, 95 & 41* in his last 4 innings.

Head-to-Head

The two teams have met just once before in T20Is, with the match rained-off in the 2024 T20 World Cup. In a match reduced to 10 overs due to rain, Scotland scored an impressive 90/0 off their 10 overs, but the rain ended the contest at that point.

England Form

After a great build-up to the World Cup, England scraped home against a bold Nepal side in their opener, only to go down to the big-hitting West Indies side by 30 runs in their second match in the tournament.

The West Indies took the England attack to task in scoring 196/6 off their 20 overs after recovering from 8/2 after just seven balls of their innings. Jofra Archer and Sam Curran both picked up a wicket but went for 12 runs to the over, but the stars of the innings with the ball were Jamie Overton (2/33, econ 8.25) and Adil Rashid (2/16, econ 4.00).

Phil Salt (30 of 14), Jos Buttler (21 off 14) and Jacob Bethell (33 off 23) got England off to a positive start to hit 90/3 in the 10th over. Sam Curran (43* off 30) did his best to keep the chase alive, but England lost their last seven wickets for 76 runs as they were bowled out for 166 off 19 overs.

Scotland Form

Scotland bounced back from a 35-run defeat to the West Indies in their opener to pick up a 73-run win over Italy in their second match of the World Cup.

George Munsey dominated the Italian attack, hitting 15 boundaries in his 54-ball 84 (S/R 155.55). Munsey added 126 for the first wicket with Michael Jones (37 off 30). Brandon McMullen slammed four sixes in an incredible 18-ball 41* to lift Scotland to 207/4 off their 20 overs.

Scotland’s bowlers got stuck into the Italian top order, knocking over their top three for 40 runs before Italy put together a strong stand for the fourth wicket. Michael Leask bowled superbly to pick up 4/17 (econ 4.25) as Scotland sliced through Italy’s last seven batters for just 31 runs. Brad Currie (1/12, econ 6.00) and Mark Watt (2/24, econ 6.00) played a strong hand in Scotland’s win.

England vs Scotland Team News & Squads

England will be desperate to rack up their second win of the tournament as the Super 8s draw near. They could look to drop Tom Banton, who has scored just four runs in his two innings in the tournament. His place could be taken by Ben Duckett or Rehan Ahmed.

Speaking to the TV commentators after their defeat to the West Indies, England skipper Harry Brook was hugely relieved that his side had won their first match against Nepal.

"Thank God we won against Nepal the other night otherwise we'd be in a tricky situation. We probably thought it was chaseable for sure. It probably didn't dew up as much as we were expecting, it probably didn't skid onto the bat as much as we were expecting,” admitted Brook.

Scotland captain Richie Berrington was buoyant after his side’s emphatic win over Italy.

“It was really important for us to bounce back strongly. In the end it was a comprehensive win but we had to work hard for it. It was important we got over 200 on that pitch as we knew they had good players in their line-up,” saud Berrington in a post-match interview.

“Early wickets were key and it put us on the front foot. I was pleased with how the bowlers stuck to their plans and kept taking wickets. We will enjoy this win and then we will start preparing for the game against England,” added Berrington.

England squad: Harry Brook (c), Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Josh Tongue, Luke Wood.

Scotland squad: Richie Berrington (c), Tom Bruce, Matthew Cross, Brad Currie, Oliver Davidson, Chris Greaves, Zainullah Ihsan, Michael Jones, Michael Leask, Finlay McCreath, Brandon McMullen, George Munsey, Safyaan Sharif, Mark Watt, Bradley Wheal.

Verdict

I am backing England to win. I am also backing Phil Salt to top score for England.

George Munsey is a good bet to top score for Scotland.
