Last updated: 2 hours ago

Australia heads into the upcoming cricket match as overwhelming favourites, with attention focused on top performers from both teams. Steven Smith and Mitchell Starc are expected to lead Australia, with Starc projected to take over 5.5 wickets. For Bangladesh, Mominul Haque is tipped to score over 47.5 runs, while Taijul Islam is backed to grab more than 2.5 wickets. The betting odds and expert backing suggest a closely watched contest, but with Australia seen as the likely victor.

Australia vs Bangladesh Predictions

With home ground advantage and a hard, fast pitch, Australia’s batters and bowlers should dominate the Bangladesh side. The visitors have some talented batters and bowlers who could produce some impressive performances in the match, but they are unlikely to have the strength as a unit to challenge the home side.

  • Australia’s Steven Smith has scored 46, 110* & 43 in his last 5 knocks.
  • Australia’s Cameron Green has scores of 53, 52*, 25 & 27 in his last 5 innings.
  • Australia’s Mitchell Starc has figures of 2/57, 4/40 & 2/26 in 3 matches.
  • Bangladesh’s Mominul Haque has scored 93*, 33 & 60 in his last 6 knocks.
  • Bangladesh’s Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored 109* against Cricket Australia XI.
  • Bangladesh’s Taijul Islam has taken 4/36, 2/53 & 7/138 in his last 4 innings.

Head-to-Head

Australia have won four and lost one of their last five Tests against Bangladesh, with their last meeting being back in 2017.

Australia Form

Australia enter the two-Test series against Bangladesh as clear favourites and will be aiming for a strong start when the opening Test begins at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin on 13 August.

The series forms part of the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship, with Australia currently sitting at the top of the standings. Playing at home, they will expect to make full use of familiar conditions and their considerable squad depth.

Pat Cummins returns as captain and leads a formidable bowling group that includes Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon. Scott Boland adds further pace depth, while Cameron Green and Beau Webster provide valuable all-round balance.

Australia’s batting line-up also looks strong, with Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head and Jake Weatherald among the key names. Alex Carey is expected to take the gloves, with Josh Inglis also included in the squad.

The hosts have been in excellent Test form, winning four of their previous five matches in the Ashes series against England. In Darwin, where conditions could offer assistance to the seamers, Australia will look to dominate with both bat and ball.

Bangladesh Form

Bangladesh begin their first Test series in Australia since 2003 when they face the hosts in Darwin from 13 August.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto leads a squad that includes experienced figures such as Mushfiqur Rahim, Mominul Haque and the recalled Soumya Sarkar. Their experience will be vital as Bangladesh attempt to adjust quickly to Australian conditions.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz will serve as vice-captain and is expected to play an important role with both bat and ball. Litton Das has recovered from injury and joined the squad, adding further strength to the middle order and wicketkeeping options.

The pace attack will be led by Taskin Ahmed, with support from Hasan Mahmud, Khaled Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain. Taijul Islam and Mehidy give Bangladesh spin options, although they may need their seamers to carry a heavy workload in Darwin.

Bangladesh lost their warm-up match against a Cricket Australia XI, underlining the challenge of adapting to local conditions. To compete with a strong Australian side, they will need discipline with the ball and major contributions from their senior batters.

Team news

Darwin should bring dry, hot conditions and a hard Marrara surface with true bounce, early seam movement and later wear that could invite variable bounce and spin over five days.

Australia (possible XI): Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Beau Webster, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon.

Bangladesh (possible XI): Litton Das, Tanzid Hasan, Mominul Haque, Jaker Ali, Najmul Hossain Shanto (c), Mushfiqur Rahim, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Khaled Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain.

Verdict

Australia are massive favourites to take the win, with Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Mominul Haque and Taijul Islam all backed to star with bat and ball for their sides.
