New Zealand v India 5th T20I Preview - Sharma to lead India fightback

Editor
Last updated: 3 hours ago

India are predicted to bounce back from their heavy defeat in the 4th T20I and secure a 4-1 series win. The main recommendation is for India to recover and finish the series with a strong performance, reflecting confidence in their resilience after setbacks. This tip is based on India's ability to respond to adversity, though it does not guarantee a result. The focus is on India's expected reaction following a significant loss, aiming to close out the series successfully.

New Zealand v India predictions - 5th T20I

Auckland’s dramatic turnaround to win the 4th T20I by 87 runs after losing the first three matches gives New Zealand one last chance to cut India’s winning margin in Hamilton.

  • New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips hit 107 off 49 balls in the 4th T20I.
  • New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell has scored 33, 28, 89* & 24 in his last 5 knocks.
  • New Zealand’s Jacob Duffy took 4/23 vs India.
  • India's Abhishek Sharma has scored 29, 27, 113 & 27 in this series.
  • India's Tilak Varma has scored 51* & 35 in his last 3 innings.
  • India's Mayank Yadav took 3/48 in the 4th T20I.
  • India have won 4 of their last 5 T20Is against New Zealand.

Head-to-Head

India have won four of their last five T20Is against New Zealand, although New Zealand secured an 87-run win in the 4th T20I, which is a dead rubber as India have secured the series win.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand’s explosive 87-run victory at Eden Park changed the mood of a series that had seemed entirely one-sided. India won each of the first three matches while chasing, but Glenn Phillips produced the defining innings of the tour on Friday, clearing the ropes 10 times in a 49-ball 107.

Michael Bracewell’s 65 from 25 balls turned a formidable total into 259/7, the Black Caps’ highest T20I score. Jacob Duffy (4/23) and Mitchell Santner (2/24) starred with the ball for New Zealand.

India Form

India’s reply was effectively wrecked in the opening over when Jacob Duffy removed both Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan. The tourists ended their 20 overs on just 172/9 which served as a sharp reminder that even this deep batting group can be exposed if early wickets fall.

The final match in Hamilton offers India a chance to respond before the ODI leg of the tour and New Zealand an opportunity to finish 3-2 rather than 4-1.

Team News

India recalled Kishan and Mayank Yadav for the last match game in place of Sooryavanshi and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Matt Henry has been ruled out of the remaining T20Is by a calf issue, while Kyle Jamieson is unavailable for the last two matches. Lockie Ferguson is an option for the final game if fit and selected.

Seddon Park generally offers a truer batting surface once the ball loses its initial movement, with an average first-innings score in the region of 185-190, with seamers taking a significant share of wickets.

New Zealand (predicted): Finn Allen, Tim Seifert (wk), Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Bevon Jacobs, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner (c), Nathan Smith, Adam Milne, Jacob Duffy, Matthew Fisher.

India (predicted): Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer (c), Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav, Prince Yadav.

Verdict

I'm backing India to bounce back from their big defeat in the 4th T20I to secure a 4-1 series triumph. Glenn Phillips and Abhishek Sharma have both been incredibly consistent in the season and I'm backing them to both finish with a flourish.
