The Algeria vs Austria WC 2026 group stage clash is expected to be tightly contested, with both sides likely to settle for a draw, securing their progression to the knockout round. Algeria have lost just two of their last 27 matches, while Austria have been strong, unbeaten in six of their last seven. Both squads have navigated tricky groups and are set to field strong starting elevens, though fitness concerns linger. Given the stakes, a draw is the most probable outcome.

Algeria vs Austria Predictions

This should be a tight, cagey contest with a draw likely to send both outfits through to the next round.
  • Algeria are unbeaten in 25 of their last 27 matches.
  • Austria are unbeaten in 6 of their last 7 matches.

Head to Head

Austria won their only previous match 2-0 against Algeria. That clash took place in 1982 and should have no bearing on this enounter.

Algeria Form

Algeria had mixed results so far at the World Cup 2026 and probably will advance to the next stage with a point here.

Besides an early goal of Fares Chaibi which was disallowed by VAR, they haven’t shown anything in their opening match against Argentina, suffering a well-deserved 3-0 loss here, posting just 0.33 xG and firing zero shots on target.

Start of the second round clash against underdog Jordan was also poor, trailing by one goal at the break but eventually pulled a comeback and won 2-1 thanks to goals scored by Nadir Benbouali and Amine Gouiri.

This was a well-deserved win, posting 1.89-0.64 xG, 72% possession and 8-4 shots against the Asian side.

Austria Form

Like their upcoming opponents Austria also claimed three points from their opening two matches at the WC 2026 and will advance as second placed team with a draw or win here.

Das Team earned three points in the first round against Jordan 3-1 but had to work really hard to claim them. Romano Schmid put them ahead early but the score was tied at half-time. The lead was regained in the 76th minute thanks to Al Arab’s own goal, while Marko Arnautovic finished the job in stoppage time.

They failed to replicate such attacking performance in the second match against Argentina, deservedly losing 2-0 while firing just one shot on target. The world champions even missed a penalty in the first half.

Algeria vs Austria News & Predicted Lineups

Algeria (4-2-3-1) Luca Zidane; Rafik Belghali, Aissa Mandi, Ramy Bensebaini, Rayan Ait Nouri; Hicham Boudaoui, Nabil Bentaleb; Anis Hadj Moussa, Ibrahim Maza, Fares Chaibi; Amine Gouiri

Riyad Mahrez's fitness is questionable, not looking great on the pitch as starter in the second round so I expect Anis Hadj Moussa to take his place.

Austria (4-2-3-1) Alexander Schlager; Stefan Posch, Kevin Danso, David Alaba, Konrad Laimer; Nicolas Seiwald, Xaver Schlager; Romano Schmid, Paul Wanner, Marcel Sabitzer; Michael Gregoritsch

Stefan Posch suffered a serious jaw injury in the opening round but kept on playing with a protective mask. Marko Arnautovic and Sasa Kalajdzic are expected to start on bench.

Verdict

Algeria have been a tough team to beat in the last 12 months, losing just two out of their last 27 matches across competitions. Both them and Austria are likely to advance with a draw here and I expect them to share the spoils.
