Borussia Monchengladbach vs Mainz

Borussia Monchengladbach desperately need a response after losing their opening three league matches and conceding 12 goals in the process. Their latest setback was particularly damaging, a 5-0 defeat at Freiburg that left them 17th without a point.

Hugo Bolin has at least provided some attacking encouragement with two goals, but defensive issues remain the major concern. Gladbach have also failed to beat Mainz in their last six home league meetings, adding further pressure as they search for the result that can finally kick-start their campaign.

Mainz have made the steadier start, collecting four points from three matches despite suffering a 3-1 home defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt last time out. Phillip Tietz has been their main attacking threat, scoring three goals already and sitting among the Bundesliga’s leading scorers. Their away numbers are particularly striking, with five goals scored and none conceded on the road so far.

Mainz have also scored on their last seven league visits to Monchengladbach and remain unbeaten in their previous six away meetings with Saturday’s opponents, giving them reason for confidence.

Hamburger vs 1. FC Koln

Hamburger’s return has started painfully, with three successive defeats leaving them bottom of the table without a point or a goal. Their most recent outing ended in a 5-0 defeat at RB Leipzig, taking their goals conceded tally to 12 in just three matches.

Their attacking problems are equally serious, with HSV yet to find the net this season. They have historically competed well with Koln, winning two of the last five meetings, but current form suggests they need significant improvement at both ends of the pitch to turn things around.

Koln arrives with four points from their opening three matches and a far more encouraging attacking record than their hosts. Thijs Dallinga has already scored twice, while Koln have found the net in each of their three league fixtures. Their latest outing produced a 1-1 draw with Werder Bremen, extending their winless run to two matches.

Away form has been less convincing, however, with four goals conceded in their only match on the road. Koln’s ability to create pressure is notable, averaging more than seven corners per match across the opening weeks.

Schalke vs Elversberg

Schalke will be encouraged by their 3-1 victory away to Union Berlin, a result that lifted them to four points from three matches. Robin Gosens, Adil Aouchiche and Maximilian Wober have each contributed a goal, giving Schalke several attacking options rather than relying on one scorer.

Their recent record against Elversberg is also strong, with three wins from the last four league meetings. Home meetings have proved trickier, with Schalke losing two of their last three against Elversberg at their own ground, making this a potentially awkward assignment.

Elversberg have six points from three matches after opening the season with two victories before losing 2-1 to Bayern Munich. Maurice Krattenmacher has been one of the standout performers, scoring three times and placing himself among the league’s leading marksmen. Their attacking numbers have been solid, particularly away from home, where they have already scored four goals.

The concern is how much pressure they are allowing opponents to generate: Elversberg have conceded an average of almost 25 goal attempts per match, the highest figure in the league so far.

Paderborn vs Hoffenheim

Paderborn remain winless after three matches and have yet to score a league goal, leaving them with just one point and an immediate attacking problem to solve. Their latest outing ended in a 3-0 defeat at Dortmund, extending their scoreless start to three games. Defensive numbers have at least been respectable at home where they have conceded only once but their lack of cutting edge continues to undermine them.

History offers little encouragement with Paderborn failing to beat Hoffenheim in their last six league meetings and scoring just once across those encounters.

Hoffenheim head into the contest after claiming their first win of the campaign, beating VfB Stuttgart 2-1 to move onto three points. Adam Hlozek has made a promising start with two goals, while Hoffenheim have scored in all three league matches so far. Their away record remains a concern after conceding three goals in their previous away match, but Paderborn’s lack of attacking output presents an opportunity for the visitors.

Hoffenheim are unbeaten in six league meetings with Paderborn, although several of those encounters have been low-scoring, tightly contested affairs.
