Switzerland vs Spain Preview & Tips

Spain has a slow start to the tournament but their attack has fired in their last two outings. Switzerland will offer resistance but by the end of 90 minutes, Spain should prove too strong.

I am backing Spain to win and Alvaro Morata to score.

  • Switzerland have won 1 of their last 4 matches (Euro 2020).
  • Spain have won 10 of their last 14 matches against Switzerland (all competitions).
  • Spain are undefeated in their last 11 matches (all competitions).
  • Spain’s Alvaro Morata has scored 2 goals in his last 3 matches (Euro 2020).

Head to Head

Spain have a 16-1 advantage against Switzerland with 5 draws in 22 matches.

Switzerland Form

Switzerland are undefeated in 10 of their last 11 matches and have won seven of their last 10 games.

Vladimir Petković’s side drew 1-1 against Wales in their opening match at Euro 2020. They dominated the game with 64% possession and 18-9 shots.

The Swiss fell to a 3-0 defeat against Italy in a closer match than the score suggests, Italy with 3-1 shots on target.

Switzerland beat Turkey 3-1 in their final group game. Steven Zuber provided three assists, one for Haris Seferovic and two for Xherdan Shaqiri.

Seferovic opened the scoring against France in the Round of 16, but they were 3-1 down with 10 minutes remaining. They produced a remarkable come back, Seferovic heading home and Mario Gavranovic equalising at the death.

Switzerland took it to penalties where they held their nerve, scored all five spot kicks with Yann Sommer saving Kylian Mbappé’s effort to go through.

Switzerland Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Yann Sommer, Jonas Omlin, Yvon Mvogo
Defenders: Fabian Schar, Ricardo Rodriguez, Manuel Akanji, Nico Elvedi, Jordan Lotomba, Becir Omeragic, Silvan Widmer, Loris Benito, Kevin Mbabu, Eray Comert
Midfielders: Granit Xhaka, Xherdan Shaqiri, Steven Zuber, Denis Zakaria, Remo Freuler, Edimilson Fernandes, Djibril Sow
Forwards: Haris Seferovic, Admir Mehmedi, Breel Embolo, Mario Gavranovic, Ruben Vargas, Christian Fassnacht

Vladimir Petković is unlikely to make many changes here.

Midfielder Granit Xhaka is suspended which is a big blow for Switzerland. Denis Zakaria is his likely replacement.

Spain Form

Spain are undefeated in their last 11 matches. They have won four of those with seven draws.

Luis Enrique’s side started Euro 2020 with a 0-0 draw against Sweden. They had 85% possession and 17-4 shots but failed to take their chances.

La Roja drew 1-1 against Poland, Gerard Moreno assisting Alvaro Morata for the opening goal but saw his go ahead penalty hit the post.

Spain crushed Slovakia 5-0 in their final group game. Aymeric Laporte, Pablo Sarabia and Ferran Torres scored either side of two own goals.

Spain fell behind early against Croatia in the Round of 16, goalkeeper Unai Simon conceding a howler. They hit back with goals to Pablo Sarabia, César Azpilicueta and Ferran Torres making it 3-1, but they conceded two late goals to go to extra time.

Alvaro Morata gave them a 4-3 lead and Mikel Oyarzabal put the result beyond doubt as they advanced with a 5-3 win.

Spain Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: David de Gea, Robert Sánchez, Unai Simón
Defenders: César Azpilicueta, Diego Llorente, Pau Torres, Eric García, José Gayà, Jordi Alba, Aymeric Laporte
Midfielders: Sergio Busquets (captain), Marcos Llorente, Koke (vice-captain), Thiago, Rodri, Fabián, Dani Olmo, Pedri
Forwards: Álvaro Morata, Gerard, Ferran Torres, Adama Traoré, Mikel Oyarzabal, Pablo Sarabia

Spain have a full strength side available.

Expect Sergio Busquets continue in defensive midfield and César Azpilicueta to continue at right back.

Luis Enrique should stick with Ferran Torres, Pablo Sarabia and Alvaro Morata in attack.

Verdict

Switzerland did a sensational job to get past France, but Granit Xhaka’s suspension could hurt them here. Spain should dominate possession and have strength in depth.

I am backing Spain to win in regulation time and Alvaro Morata to keep scoring.
