Both sides have enjoyed a good run of form against sides lower down the ODI rankings, but their players are in good form. South Africa’s top players have not been playing white-ball cricket while the Aussies have had their top players in action, so that could play in the visitors’ favour.

South Africa have dominated Australia in home ODIs for the last decade, claiming 11 wins from 13 clashes. Their previous series in 2023 was particularly memorable, with the Proteas recovering from 2-0 down to claim a 3-2 victory.

Skipper Temba Bavuma has massive batting power at his disposal, with Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram and David Miller joined by Tristan Stubbs and Matthew Breetzke in the squad. Marco Jansen is another major threat after scoring 47 from 23 balls and taking 5/39 in the series decider against Australia three years ago.

Gerald Coetzee adds pace alongside Jansen and Corbin Bosch, while Keshav Maharaj and Bjorn Fortuin provide spin options. South Africa's established home record and strong all-round combination make them difficult opponents to overcome.

Australia Form

Australia arrive with a significantly stronger bowling attack than for their last ODI series in South Africa. The return of Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins alongside Josh Hazlewood gives the tourists a formidable pace combination, while Nathan Ellis provides another wicket-taking option.

Adam Zampa was Australia's leading spinner during the previous series but proved expensive, making his control through the middle overs important.

Travis Head remains a key batting threat after averaging 38.00 on his last South African tour. Cooper Connolly also impressed in Zimbabwe, averaging 50 at number four, while Matt Renshaw could retain his middle-order position. Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Green add impressive batting depth to their top order which gives Australia the squad strength needed to overturn South Africa's impressive home record against the visitors.

Temba Bavuma comes back to lead the Proteas who have brought in their power-players after resting most of their first-choice line-up for the recent tri-series in Namibia.

Australia’s Billy Stanlake has a side strain while Spencer Johnson has also gone back home with an injury. Jack Edwards has been brought in as a replacement, along with Cameron Green coming back into action. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are all likely to be managed with care ahead of the Test series, but I’m backing at least two of them to front up in the 1st ODI to give Australia an early series lead.

Australia are favourites to take the win. I’m backing Quinton de Kock and Travis Head to continue their strong form by posting explosive innings at the top of their sides’ order, with Marco Jansen and Nathan Ellis to both star with the ball.
