New Zealand lead England 3-0 in their last six Test matches. The other three fixtures ended in draws. The 1st Test of the current series ended in a draw at Lord’s.
England Form
England come into the 2nd Test in Birmingham under pressure after holding out for a draw at Lord’s in the 1st Test.
England’s bowlers struggled at times in the 1st Test but Ollie Robinson took 4-75 in the first innings to help dismiss New Zealand for 378 runs. In response, Rory Burns scored 132 runs but England were all out for 275 runs.
New Zealand responded by declaring on 169 after the third day was completely washed out. Robinson was again the pick of the bowlers, taking 3-26.
England were left with 75 overs to bat out or score 273 runs. They opted to bat it out with Dom Sibley top scoring on 60 runs. Joe Root scored 40 to go with his 42 runs in the first innings as the hosts ended on 170-3 at the end of day five.
England Team News
Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer and Ben Foakes are all missing from the squad.
England’s best bowler in the 1st Test, Ollie Robinson has been suspended so won’t feature either. Dom Bess has been added to the squad.
New Zealand Form
New Zealand will be a bit disappointed that they are not leading 1-0 coming into the 2nd Test. They looked good for the win but rain on day three curtailed their chances as the match ended in a draw.
Batting first, Devon Conway smashed 200 runs on debut to continue his magnificent summer. Henry Nicholls was the only other batsmen to pass 50 as he scored 61 runs in a total of 378.
At the end of day two New Zealand had their hosts on 111-2 but on day three not a ball was bowled. The Black Caps then made early inroads on day four, dismissing England for 275 runs.
In order to force a result New Zealand tried to speed the game up, declaring on 169-6 to leave England needing 275 runs to win. The hosts never attempted to score the runs and batted out the 70 overs to draw the game.
New Zealand Team News
There has been a relaxation on the quarantine rules in the UK which has allowed Trent Boult to exit early. He should feature in the 2nd Test. Kane Williamson will miss the 2nd Test with a minor injury.
The rest of the team should remain the same but the pitch will determine who Boult replaces. If it is seam friendly Mitchell Santner is likely to make way.
