The Hundred was created to introduce a more dynamic, shorter format of cricket than T20 tournaments, featuring city-based franchises and a blend of domestic and international stars in high-octane 100-ball innings per team to determine the champion.
In 2016, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) proposed a new competition in cricket, where teams would each have a single innings consisting of 100 balls to score as many runs as possible, reducing the time to complete a match to two and a half hours.
After tweaking the rules for a few years, the inaugural The Hundred tournament took place in 2021, regularly consisting of double headers of men's and women's matches at the same venue.
The eight teams participated in the first season, including the Birmingham Phoenix, Southern Brave, Trent Rockets, Oval Invincibles, Northern Superchargers, Manchester Originals, Welsh Fire, and London Spirit.
The Southern Brave and Birmigham Phoenix competed in the inaugural final, with the Southern Brave winning by 32 runs to clinch the title.
In 2022, the Manchester Originals and Trent Rockets battled for top honours in the final, with the latter emerging as the winner by two wickets.
The Oval Invincibles secured their first of two back-to-back titles when they defeated the Manchester Originals by 14 runs in the final in 2023.
The 2024 final saw the Oval Invincibles become the first team in The Hundred to defend their title when they beat the Southern Brave by 17 runs in the final.
In its current format, 32 matches are played between eight-city-based teams during the league stage of the tournament, with each team playing four fixtures at home and four games away.
Each team will play one match against every other side, including a second bonus game against their nearest regional rival.
A hundred balls are bowled by the fielding side per inning, with the fielding side changing ends after ten balls. A bowler can deliver five or ten consecutive balls at the captain's discretion, with each bowler allowed a maximum of 20 balls per match.
Teams collect two points for a win, zero for losing and one point if both teams are tied after scoring the same amount of runs.
The team that places first in the league standings at the end of the group fixtures advances into the final. The teams finishing second and third in the table compete in the Eliminator, with the winner securing a spot in the final.
Notable records achieved by individuals in The Hundred competition since its inception:
James Vince has scored a total of 984 runs thus far.
