Race 3 – Mrs Stormiatrix (5)

Jockey: Calvin Habib

Trainer: A. P. Peter

Mrs Stormiatrix is a 4-yr-old bay filly that’s on a storming run of form, flying home in 2-1-1-7-1 finishes in her last five runs. She had a 70-day break after her disappointing seventh-place finish in April but bounced back with her third win in four runs.

Pivotal Role (3.00) will push her hard and has two wins in his five career runs before finished stone last in his last race but has had a 110-day break since that blowout. Lonely As A Cloud (3.00) has three Top 3 places in his last four runs but his career has seen plenty of finishes outside the Top 3 (16 of his 24 runs), so his consistency is a concern for my wallet.

Race 4 – Mount Pinatubo (4)

Trainer: J. J. van Vuuren

This is also set up as a tight race, with Mount Pinatubo facing stiff competition from African Pride (4.00) and Karate Kid (6.00). African Pride ran 4-1-1-3 before finishing 10th in a 14-horse field five days ago. Karate Kid has been on a stronger streak, the 5-yr-old bay gelding running 3-3-2-5-1-4-1 since the end of January.

Mount Pinatubo has a strong pedigree, with four wins, three second places and two third-place finishes in her 15 career starts, so she has the DNA to make hay in a field with only two really strong competitors to see off. Mount Pinatubo struggled through March and April, finishing 4-10-5-9, but she bounced back with a strong second place finish in her last run 54 days go, so I’m backing her to keep the good times rolling.

Race 7 – Sky Pilot (2)

Jockey: Gavin Lerena

Trainer: C. Binda

Sky Pilot has six Top 3 finishes in his 11 career starts, including two wins. He’s been on a heater since April, placing 4-3-1-2-1, which is the kind of form that’s hard to overlook. Jockey Gavin Lerena has 700 career wins in 3201 starts and has been in great form, placing 2-1-3-3-1-3 on 30 July at the Vaal racetrack.

Sky Pilot faces plenty of challenges in what is a tough field, with his strongest challenge coming from Winding Power, who has seven Top 3 finishes in his 12 career starts. Winding Power has been running strong and has finished 3-3-2-2-1-1 coming into this race, so Sky Pilot will have his work cut out in trying to take the tape first.

Race 8 – Rising Eagle (6)

Jockey: Callan Murray

Trainer: M/M de Kock

Rising Eagle is a 3-yr-old bay colt heading into his third race on the back of a second-place debut followed by a maiden win 14 days later on 11 July. Out of Vercingetorix and Intriguing Lady, there is good DNA in those legs and on the evidence of his first two outings he looks to be a champion runner.

Longsword claimed a win in his last run after some iffy performances and Southampton (3-3-5-2) and Spirit of Gabz (5-5-3-4-2) have been running strong but I don’t see any of them having the lungs to outsprint Rising Eagle.

Turffontein racing

Mount Pinatubo and Sky Pilot both have tough fields to beat out, while Mrs Stormiatrix and Rising Eagle look to have easier fields to navigate.
