Bournemouth enters the 2025/26 season on the back of its best-ever Premier League campaign, finishing sixth and securing a Europa League spot for the first time. New coach Marco Rose inherits a team known for its transition play and set-piece prowess but faces challenges in maintaining momentum amid key departures and added European fixtures. Strategic signings like António Silva and Álvaro Rodríguez aim to compensate for transfers out, while depth and midfield control remain priorities. A top-half league finish would signal ongoing progress; repeating sixth would be extraordinary.

Last Season’s Summary

Bournemouth enjoyed the best league season in the club's history in 2025/26, finishing sixth in the Premier League and qualifying for the Europa League for the first time.

The Cherries collected 57 points, finishing ahead of Chelsea and Newcastle, while their sixth-place finish represented a remarkable achievement for a club that had never previously qualified for European competition.

Andoni Iraola's side were particularly dangerous in transition and from set pieces, developing a clear identity that made them one of the Premier League's most entertaining teams. The Cherries now face the difficult task of following up their historic sixth-place finish while playing European football for the first time.

Bournemouth Coaching Change

Marco Rose arrives at Bournemouth with the responsibility of replacing Iraola and maintaining the momentum created during the Spaniard's hugely successful three-year spell.

Rose arrives with considerable experience from Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg, where he developed a reputation for energetic, aggressive football. His appointment should therefore provide some continuity in terms of intensity and pressing, even though his tactical approach will inevitably differ from Iraola's.

The German's biggest challenge will be managing Bournemouth's first European campaign. Thursday-Sunday football will place considerably more demands on a relatively small squad, while the Cherries also need to maintain their Premier League standards.

Key Transfers In

Bournemouth have focused on replacing important departures while continuing their strategy of signing young players with significant potential.

António Silva has arrived from Benfica to strengthen the centre of defence, giving Rose an outstanding young option at the back. Álvaro Rodríguez has also joined from Real Madrid, providing another attacking option, while Juanlu Sánchez has arrived from Sevilla to strengthen the defensive positions.

Key Transfers Out

Marcos Senesi has now left Bournemouth, joining Tottenham on a free transfer this summer after four seasons at the club. The Argentine defender was an important part of the side that finished sixth last season, making his departure another significant change for Marco Rose.

Enes Ünal has also departed, joining Getafe on a free transfer in August, while Hamed Traorè has moved to Marseille and Luis Sinisterra has joined Cruzeiro. Several younger players have also left on loan, including Alex Jiménez, who has joined Fiorentina.

Three Key Players

Eli Junior Kroupi: Although he starts the season injured, he could become Bournemouth's most important attacking player after leading the club with 12 goals last season. The young French forward now has a much greater responsibility following Semenyo's departure last January.

Rayan: The Brazil winger could be equally important after his impressive development and involvement with Brazil at the 2026 World Cup. His pace, direct running and creativity give Bournemouth an attacking threat that could become particularly valuable in Europe.

Lewis Cook: He remains one of the most important experienced players in the squad. The midfielder provides stability, leadership and an understanding of the club's playing style, while his experience will be particularly valuable as Bournemouth navigate their first European campaign.

Main Areas for Improvement

Bournemouth's biggest priority is maintaining their attacking threat after losing Semenyo last January and Kroupi to injury for the start of this season.

The midfield needs to become more reliable at controlling matches. Bournemouth were often at their best when they could press aggressively and attack quickly, but European football will require Rose to find ways of managing games when the intensity inevitably drops.

Squad depth is perhaps the biggest concern. Bournemouth have the smallest stadium in the Premier League and one of the league's more modest squads, yet they now face the additional demands of Europa League football. Above all, Bournemouth need to prove that sixth place was not a one-off.

Upcoming Bournemouth Transfer Activity

Bournemouth's transfer business is unlikely to be finished because Rose still needs additional depth ahead of the European campaign.

The priority is another attacking player capable of replacing some of Semenyo's production. Rayan has attracted interest from Liverpool, with his former manager Iraola reportedly interested in taking him to Anfield, although Bournemouth are under no pressure to sell.

Alex Scott is attracting interest from Chelsea and it won't be easy to hold onto the midfielder.

Overall Season Expectations - Bournemouth

Bournemouth should be targeting another top-half finish after establishing themselves as one of the Premier League's most impressive sides last season. However, repeating sixth place while competing in Europe would be a remarkable achievement.

A top-10 finish should be viewed as a successful campaign, while another European qualification would represent an outstanding result for Rose in his first season. The Europa League itself also provides Bournemouth with a historic opportunity to experience European football on a much larger stage.
