Manchester United bounced back in the 2025/26 season, claiming third place and a Champions League spot under Michael Carrick. His full-time appointment follows a transformative stint, with key midfield reinforcements like Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans joining the squad. Major departures, including Casemiro and Hojlund, mark a shift in the team's core, while Bruno Fernandes remains pivotal. Defensive solidity and squad depth are still concerns as United aim for another top-four finish and to re-establish their presence among Europe's elite. Further transfers may occur before the window closes.

Last Season’s Summary

Manchester United enjoyed a hugely improved 2025/26 campaign, finishing third in the Premier League and securing a return to the Champions League after a season of major change.

The club went through three head coaches, with Ruben Amorim dismissed in January before Darren Fletcher took temporary charge and Michael Carrick was eventually appointed for the remainder of the campaign.

Carrick transformed United's fortunes, bringing greater balance and confidence to a team that had looked vulnerable during the first half of the season.

The Red Devils also endured a disappointing domestic cup campaign, exiting the Carabao Cup in the second round against Grimsby Town and the FA Cup in the third round against Brighton.

A major highlight was the form of Bruno Fernandes, who enjoyed an outstanding individual season and helped United climb the table under Carrick. Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko also finished as joint-top scorers with 12 goals each in all competitions. Fernandes won Player of the Season and topped the assist charts, excelling once Carrick returned him to an advanced role.

It was a season that ultimately restored belief around Old Trafford, with the fine win over Man City proving a highlight.

Manchester United Coach

Michael Carrick now enters his first full season as Man United manager after doing an outstanding job as caretaker last season.

The former United midfielder inherited a struggling side in January but guided them to third place and Champions League qualification, restoring organisation and confidence in the process. His success earned him a contract running until 2028.

Carrick has already shown that he is willing to make the team more flexible tactically, moving away from Amorim's rigid system and finding a structure that better suits the players available to him.

The biggest challenge will be maintaining last season's momentum while dealing with the additional demands of Champions League football. There is optimism around Carrick, but expectations will now be considerably higher and many will wonder if sentiment played a part in not hiring a proven winner.

Key Transfers In

The Red Devils have focused heavily on strengthening midfield, with Andrey Santos arriving from Chelsea for around £50 million and Youri Tielemans joining from Aston Villa for £35 million. Karl Darlow has also arrived from Leeds on a free transfer to provide experienced goalkeeping cover.

Santos gives United greater physicality and defensive ability in midfield following Casemiro's departure, while Tielemans brings Premier League experience, passing quality and the ability to control games. In many ways, the Belgian is a similar player to Carrick.

Key Transfers Out

Manchester United have begun clearing out several players who were no longer central to the project. Casemiro left at the end of his contract, while Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia also departed after failing to establish themselves as important members of the squad.

Rasmus Hojlund has joined Napoli in a deal worth around £38 million, ending a difficult spell at Old Trafford after two seasons. André Onana has also left temporarily on loan, while Altay Bayindir has joined Celta Vigo for the season.

Marcus Rashford has returned following loan spells with Aston Villa and Barcelona and could now have an unexpected role under Carrick. His future remains one of the biggest talking points of the remaining transfer window, particularly after Carrick praised his attitude and fitness. Whether he can win back the supporters and maintain his focus is the big question.

Three Key Players

Bruno Fernandes: he remains Manchester United's most important attacking player and will again be expected to provide the creativity, goals and leadership that drive the team forward. His exceptional 2025/26 campaign set a new Premier League assist record and earned him the league's Player of the Season award. His time in a deeper role under Amorim is now a distant memory.

Bryan Mbeumo: the winger is another major figure after an impressive first season at Old Trafford. He finished joint-top scorer with 12 goals in all competitions and his pace, movement and ability to play across the forward line make him crucial to Carrick's attacking plans.

Benjamin Sesko: the physical could be equally important after also scoring 12 goals last season. He turned around a slow start, but it remains to be seen if he is trusted to start on a weekly basis.

Main Areas for Improvement

Manchester United's biggest priority is defensive consistency after conceding 54 goals in the Premier League last season. Carrick improved the team's organisation, but there are still concerns over the quality and depth available at centre back and fullback. An injury to Luke Shaw would leave the team short of quality.

The midfield also needed strengthening after Casemiro's departure and Manuel Ugarte's injury problems. Tielemans and Santos should provide greater depth and control, while Carlos Baleba is also being pursued as United look to add another powerful defensive midfielder. That would mean quite the engine room overhaul.

Carrick must also manage the demands of Champions League football without allowing domestic form to suffer. Having Baleba in midfield would allow rotation, but some areas can't afford injuries (left back in particular).

Upcoming Manchester United Transfer Activity

Manchester United's transfer business is unlikely to be finished because Carrick has already admitted that the club wants and needs more signings before the window closes on September 1st.

Carlos Baleba is the major name currently being pursued, with United understood to be close to an agreement with Brighton for the midfielder. The deal is expected to be worth more than £60 million and would give Carrick another powerful option in the centre of the pitch.

The club could also look at defensive reinforcements if suitable opportunities become available, while Rashford's future remains unresolved. United have been more cautious financially than some of their Premier League rivals, with Carrick confirming that a £100 million signing is not expected.

With the transfer deadline approaching on September 1st, United still have time to add further quality before their Champions League campaign begins.

Overall Season Expectations – Manchester United

Manchester United should be targeting another Champions League finish after securing third place last season. The return to European football will increase the demands on Carrick, but the club now has greater stability and confidence than it did 12 months ago.

A top-four finish should be viewed as the minimum realistic target, while a title challenge would represent a huge step forward. The Champions League also provides an opportunity for United to test themselves against Europe's elite, while the domestic cups could be targeted as a way of ending the club's trophy drought.

There are still major questions around defensive quality, squad depth and whether United have strengthened enough to compete with Arsenal and Manchester City. Overall, United have enough attacking quality and momentum to challenge near the top of the Premier League, but Carrick must prove that last season's resurgence was the beginning of a new era rather than simply a brilliant short-term turnaround.
