English Premier League Predictions - 5 September, Matchday 3

Editor
Last updated: 1 hour ago

This weekend's football predictions highlight strong confidence in Brentford and Hull securing wins, along with a low-scoring outcome for Brentford’s game (under 2.5 goals). Brighton and Leeds are expected to produce a goal-rich match. Additionally, Erling Haaland is a strong candidate for recording at least three shots on target versus Coventry. The recommended bets cover match results and key player performances, with associated odds suggesting good value for savvy bettors.

English Premier League Predictions - 5 September 2026, Matchday 3

Brentford vs Sunderland

Brentford are riding high with four wins and a draw from their last five matches, scoring 17 goals to two in their last four matches. Sunderland’s defence is strong, conceding just three goals in four matches but scoring just six, so while they could keep the scoreline low I don’t see them having the strength to outplay their hosts.

Brentford are undefeated at home in their last seven matches, winning three of their last four, with a 15-2 goal spread. Sunderland have lost three of their last five matches on the road, so this looks like it’s heading strongly towards a home win.

Brighton vs Leeds

This should be a cracker between two teams in form with tight defences. Leeds have gone W-W-W-D in their last four matches, scoring 7-1 goals across those game, with three clean sheets.

Brighton have been marvellous, running W-D-W-W and scoring 9-0 in total over those four matches before they had a cracker against high-riding Chelsea. Playing away Brighton put in a superb performance, losing 4-3 in a thrilling match which suggests Brighton have what it takes to finish high up the table.

The Chelsea match aside both teams' defences have been tight this season, but they both should be adventurous as they look for early points ahead of a tough season, so I see them both hitting the net. Brighton should take the win but it’s tight and could go any of three ways, so match goals looks the best bet.

Manchester City vs Coventry

City got a fright in their opener against Bournemouth but scored two late goals to prove they have the winning touch under their new boss. A 4-1 away win over Crystal Palace in their last match will have the opposition weary. They are close to unbeatable at home so this looks a certain win, although Bournemouth proved that they can be restricted, even at home.

Coventry have lost both their matches this season without scoring, and while City can be tight on defence they also know how to lose the plot at the back, so I’d be weary of backing a clean sheet for the hosts, despite their visitors failing to score this season. Although City know how to score big, their result against Bournemouth shows they can struggle as well, so there aren’t many great odds to go for here.

Haaland is possibly the best banker, but the only interesting odds I can see worth backing are for him to have three or more shots on target. Can’t see that not happening against a struggling Coventry defence.

Hull vs Aston Villa

Villa are in freefall after losing five matches on the bounce, scoring just three goals. They have lost their two Premier League matches without scoring and conceding five goals. They did give defending champs Arsenal a tough ride at home in their last match, going down just 1-0, but Hull should be full of confidence

Hull are on a three-match winning streak, beating Man United 2-0 at home in their opener and following that with a 1-0 away win over Coventry. Inbetween they beat Stoke 1-1 away in the League Cup after a penalty shootout.

Villa have lost their last four matches on the road, while Hull are undefeated at home in eight matches, so this is flashing brightly for a home win.

Verdict

This weekend I’m feeling strong about backing Brentford and Hull for wins. Brighton and Leeds should get busy with goals and I’m also backing Erling Haaland to get plenty of shots on target against Coventry.
