Hugo Broos has spoken to the Belgian media and confirmed his reign as Bafana Bafana coach is over. There is a chance that he could be handed a role as an advisor.

Broos Leaves as Coach, Could Take a New Role

It had been the intention of Hugo Broos to retire after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Talk had intensified about a dramatic U-turn on that decision.

He spoke to the Belgian media, saying: “Will I continue as a coach after all? No, it is irreversible, but if they need me for something else, perhaps in scouting, that is something else.

"Football is no longer going to be a part of my life 24 hours a day.

“I have already had a conversation with the chairman of the South African federation. He would like to keep me in a different role, as an advisor or something like that. I will return at the end of July to say a final farewell; I am curious to see what he will propose to me.”

Candidates to Replace Broos

Pitso Mosimane: the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach is the front-runner for the role.

Carlos Queiroz: after leaving the Ghana job and having extensive international experience, a second stint with Bafana Bafana is being mooted.

Rulani Mokwena: the young tactician is currently working for Al-Ittihad in Libya. He is an outsider to get the job.

Benni McCarthy: the former striker is currently the coach of Kenya, but would consider a move to manage his nation.
