Afghanistan vs Hong Kong Predictions

Afghanistan are a pushover no more in international cricket. Certainly not so in the Asia Cup in recent years as Afghanistan have pushed the boundaries to become a top-tier international side, particularly in conditions that are slower that aid their spinners.

Hong Kong, on the other hand, will have their work cut out against one of the best in Asia in the tournament opener. Hong Kong qualified for the Asia Cup after beating Qatar and Malaysia in the 2024 ACC Men's Premier Cup.

While they lost to Oman in that tournament, they qualified for the Asia Cup on account of beating Nepal.

Afghanistan Form

Afghanistan, UAE and Pakistan played in a tri-series in the UAE in the lead-up to this tournament. Afghanistan were beaten by Pakistan in the final of that tri-series.

Afghanistan have been participating in domestic cricket back home in preparation for this tournament. The team will be led by Rashid Khan, who recently was in England for The Hundred.

Among the batters, Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz have been in impressive form but all eyes will be on Sediqullah Atal, who has been in exceptional batting rhythm in domestic cricket.

Noor Ahmad, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and AM Ghazanfar are expected to form a strong spin-bowling group.

Hong Kong have participated in several tournaments in the lead-up to this tournament, including a tri-series against Malaysia and Bahrain, followed by the Asia-Pacific Champions Trophy, where they lost to Malaysia in the final.

Hong Kong will continue to rely on their most experienced players in Yasim Murtuza, who will lead the team, along with Ehsan Khan, Babar Hayat, Nizakat Khan and Zeeshan Ali.

Afghanistan have too many bases covered for this Hong Kong team. While HK have some decent spinners of their own, they wouldn’t have faced the quality of bowling that Afghanistan possesses. While the odds are low, there should be no upset in the Asia Cup opener.
