Canada vs New Zealand Predictions

Canada have suffered two big defeats in the World Cup, although they did take the UAE to the last over. New Zealand are looking like potential champions, but their loss to the Proteas will have been a knock for their confidence. I’m backing them to bounce back with a massive win over Canada to give their net run rate a major boost.

After losing their opening match to South Africa by 57 runs, Canada suffered their second defeat of the World Cup when they lost to the UAE by five wickets with two balls remaining.

Canada were in trouble at 38/3 in the sixth over when Navneet Dhaliwal (34 off 28) and Harsh Thaker (50 off 41) added 58 for the fourth wicket. Shreyas Movva chipped in with 21 off 21 balls but with no other support from the middle order Canada posted just 150/7 off their 20 overs.

Saad Bin Zafar gave Canada hope by knocking over three of the UAE’s top five batters as they stumbled to 66/4. Saad Bin Zafar ended with figures of 4-0-14-3 (econ 3.50) but it was not enough to prevent the UAE from completing a five-wicket win.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand got their campaign off to a flying start by beating Afghanistan by five wickets and the UAE by 10 wickets. They then lost to South Africa by seven wickets in their last match.

Despite scoring fast in their opening five over, New Zealand found themselves in trouble at 64/4 in the seventh over. Mark Chapman (48 off 26) and Daryl Mitchell (32 off 24) dug them out of their hole to reach a respectable score of 175/7 off their 20 overs.

The New Zealand bowlers couldn’t prevent the Proteas from getting off to a flying start and they raced to a seven-wicket win off just 17.1 overs. James Neesham (1/15, econ 7.50) was the pick of the Kiwi bowlers, with Rachin Ravindra (1/9) and Lockie Ferguson (1/33) the other wicket-takers.

Canada’s captain Dilpreet Bajwa admitted that his side made some key errors during their last group match loss to the UAE that has effectively seen them eliminated from the World Cup.

"We were expecting 160 or 170, but since we lost early wickets, we were happy with 150. We knew it would be a hard total to chase in the second innings, but Sohaib and Aryansh played very well,” said Bajwa.

“When we were taking wickets, we didn't manage to keep the momentum going. That is where we lacked. Our fast bowlers didn't stick to their plans, and that cost us the game. We are just expecting our top order to get some runs and our fast bowlers to find their lines again," added Bajwa.

Lockie Ferguson will miss the match as he has leave to be with his wife for the birth of his first child. Ferguson has figures of 2/40 1/35 and 1/33 in the first three matches of the World Cup.

"It's an incredibly exciting time for Lockie and Emma and we're pleased that he'll be at home for such a special occasion. At this stage, we won't be replacing Lockie in the squad as the plan would be for him to return for the Super Eight phase of the tournament,” said New Zealand head coach Rob Walter at a pre-match press conference.
