India are the world masters of T20I cricket and they crushed South Africa by 101 runs in the 1st T20I to lift their spirits after losing the Test series 2-0. After winning the first ODI, the Proteas lost the next two ODIs and now the 1st T20I, to put India in a more positive frame of mind regarding South Africa’s tour to India.

India’s Hardik Pandya has scored 38, 77* & 59* in his last 5 innings.

India made it three wins from their last three completed T20Is when they beat South Africa by 101 runs.

India posted a competitive 175/6 off their 20 overs, and once again it was a powerful finish that put them in the driving seat. Hardik Pandya’s 59* included 10 boundaries as he lifted India from 78/4 off 11.4 overs to 175/6. Abhishek Sharma (17 off 12) got the innings off to a strong start for Tilak Varma (26 off 32) and Axar Patel (23 off 21) to set a platform for Pandya’s pillaging.

Four Indian bowlers picked up two wickets apiece, with the most economical being Jasprit Bumrah (3/17, econ 5.66) and Axar Patel (2/7, econ 3.50).

South Africa Form

South Africa suffered their third defeat on the bounce when they lost to India by 101 runs in the 1st T20I of their three-match series.

Dewald Brevis (22 off 14, with 18 runs in boundaries) was the only Proteas batter to pass 14 in a disastrous batting display that saw the visitors routed for 74 off just 12.3 overs. On paper their Top 6 is terrifying and if they click into gear they can overpower the Indian side.

Lungi Ngidi was back to his best T20 form, knocking over three of India’s top four batters in returning figures of 3/31 (econ 7.75). Marco Jansen was the most economical of the Proteas bowlers, his four overs costing just 23 runs (econ 5.75).

The defeat in the 1st T20I was South Africa’s sixth T20I defeat by over 100 runs, with India claiming three of those wins.

Star Indian paceman Jasprit Bumrah became the fifth bowler to reach 100 T20I wickets during the 1st T20I.

“At 48 for 3 and to get 175, was great. We thought we would get to 160, but 175 was unbelievable. With 7-8 batters, there will be days when the other batters cover it up. We want everyone to be fearless and enjoy their batting. The way we bowled, the options we had, I was very happy,” said Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav.

“I had to back my shots. I realised the wicket had a bit of spice. I had to be a bit gutsy. It was more about timing the ball, not breaking the ball. As a cricketer, I have never been fussy about what roles I have in the game. I have always been motivated to all the time make sure that it doesn't matter what Hardik Pandya wants, it is about what India wants. The mindset helps me,” said Player of the Match Hardik Pandya.

“There was some good form with the ball and field, but the batting went downhill. Pity that it happened in the first game. We would have taken 175 at the toss,” said skipper Aiden Markram after the 1st T20I.
