South Africa vs Uganda Preview & Tips

South Africa are unbeaten in three matches against Uganda with two wins and a draw. Considering the horror form of Uganda, the hosts are backed to win this with ease.

  • South Africa have won 3 of their last 6 home matches (all competitions).
  • South Africa have seen under 2.5 goals in 4 of their last 5 home matches (all competitions).
  • South Africa are unbeaten in their last 3 matches against Uganda (all competitions).
  • Uganda have lost 4 of their last 6 matches (all competitions).
  • Uganda have failed to score in 4 of their last 6 matches (all competitions).

Head to Head

South Africa hold a 2-0 advantage across the previous three meetings with Uganda along with one draw.

The sides last met in the 2019 COSAFA Cup where it ended 1-1. South Africa went on to win on penalties.

South Africa Form

South Africa's form has been patchy at best. They failed to qualify for the next African Cup of Nations which led to the appointment of Hugo Broos as the new manager.

Bafana Bafana lost 2-1 to Zambia in a friendly before beating Sao Tome 2-1 at home and 4-2 away in the AFCON qualifiers. Brighton's Percy Tau scored a brace in the latter fixture.

South Africa then came from 1-0 down to draw 1-1 against Ghana. Just a point was needed from their final qualifying match to reach AFCON but a 2-0 defeat in Sudan sealed their fate.

South Africa Squad & News

New coach Hugo Broos is being vaccinated so his assistant Cedomir Janevski will pick the side. Previous captain Thulani Hlatshwayo has been dropped in defence.

Forward Percy Tau is ruled out due to COVID-19 so there could be debuts for uncapped strikers Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Evidence Makgopa. Midfielders Teboho Mokoena and Sipho Mbule are ruled out due to illness.

Goalkeepers: Bruce Bvuma, Ronwen Williams
Defenders: Rushine De Reuck, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Innocent Maela, Sibusiso Mabiliso, Njabulo Ngcobo, Denwin Farmer, Craig Martin
Midfielders: Keagan Dolly, Lebohang Maboe, Aubrey Modiba, Thabang Monare, Ethan Brooks
Strikers: Bongokuhle Hlongwane, Thabiso Kutumela, Evidence Makgopa

Uganda Form

Uganda are six matches without victory including four defeats. They have scored in just two of those matches.

During the CHAN tournament earlier this year, Uganda suffered two defeats in their three matches. They lost 2-1 to Togo and 5-2 against Morocco. That came after they managed a 0-0 draw against Rwanda to kick the tournament off.

The Cranes failed to qualify for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations as a 1-0 defeat in South Sudan was followed by a 0-0 draw against Burkina Faso and a 1-0 defeat in Malawi.

Uganda Squad & News

Uganda captain Denis Onyango has retired from international football. Chippa United’s Ismael Watenga will start in goal for Abudallah Mubiru’s team.

Forward Emmanuel Arnold Okwi will captain the side whilst South-African based Moses Waiswa will anchor midfield. Fellow midfielders Hassan Wasswa and Micheal Azira have also called time on their international careers.

Goalkeepers: Ismael Watenga, Mathias Kigonya, Charles Lukwago.
Defenders: Paul Willa, Kizza Mustafa, Kayondo Abdu Aziizi, Enock Walusimbi, Murushid Juuko, Halid Lwaliwa, Paul Patrick Mbowa, Hassan Muhamud.
Midfielders: Lwanga Taddeo, Bobosi Byaruhanga, Shafiq Kuchi Kagimu, Allan Okello, Moses Waiswa, Abdul Lumala, Ibrahim Orit, Isma Mugulusi Mugulusi, Steven Sserwadda.
