Head to Head
This is the first competitive fixture between these sides.
Aston Villa Form
Aston Villa were pushing for an automatic qualification spot in the Champions League group. The Villans have dropped out of the top eight after two defeats, one draw and one win in four.
Villa beat Leipzig 3-2 away in December and went unbeaten in six of their following eight in all competitions. Unai Emery’s team were undefeated in five before losing 1-0 at Monaco on Tuesday.
The Midlands outfit were then heading for a 1-0 home win against West Ham and eventually drew 1-1. Both sides had 14 shots and Jacob Ramsey’s early opener was cancelled out by a 70th-minute West Ham leveller.
Aston Villa Injuries & Team News
Donyell Malenand Andrés García are ineligible to play in the Champions League and will miss out.
Defender Tyrone Mings came off injured against West Ham and is unlikely to feature.
Midfielders John McGinn and Ross Barkley and defender Pau Torress are sidelined with injuries.
Celtic Form
Scottish champions Celtic have qualified for the Champions League play-off rounds and are unbeaten in five successive European games. The Hoops are also unbeaten in five consecutive domestic matches, winning four.
Celtic lost their opening Champions League match and responded with three draws and two wins. The Bhoys sealed their play-off spot with a 3-1 win against Leipzig and draws with Club Brugge 1-1 and Dinamo Zagreb 0-0.
Brendan Rodgers’ side extended their unbeaten run with a 1-0 home win against Young Boys. The Glasgow side had 16 shots and 60% possession and a late own goal helped the Bhoys to seal all three points.
Celtic Injuries & Team News
Forward Daizen Maeda was sent off against Young Boys and is suspended here.
Midfield duo Odin Holm and James Forrest are unavailable due to injury.
Verdict
Villa looked unconvincing at Monaco and struggled to see off West Ham on Sunday. In-form Celtic are hard to beat and can cap their Champions League group campaign with at least a point.
