Sri Lanka are full of skill but lack endurance

Currently ranked 8th in ODI cricket, Sri Lanka has tasted triumph and joy and the team have made the final on three occasions. They’re a side that should never be taken for granted as they have immense batting skill and super-crafty bowlers who know how to put the brakes on the opposition batting. However, they do tend to be inconsistent at times, making them a difficult team to bet for or against, although they are usually a delight to watch.

Dasun Shanaka has been selected to skipper a side that will be without the injured Dushmantha Chameera and Wanindu Hasaranga, and which also includes a trio of bowlers who have all just recovered from injury (Maheesh Theekshana, Dilshan Madushanka and Lahiru Kumara), while pacemen Pramod Madushan and Binura Fernando have been omitted from the squad.

"Wanindu Hasaranga has not been included in the 15-member squad as the player is still in the process of recovering from an injury. His recovery will be monitored, and if he is declared fit to play, he will be considered as a replacement in the event of an injury to a squad member during the tournament," read a statement from Sri Lanka Cricket.

World Cup history

Sri Lanka played in the first five World Cups with just modest results, before bursting onto the world headlines with a signature win in 1996, in large part due to the tactics-busting batting of Sanath Jayasuriya opening the batting with unrestrained hitting. They lost in the semi-final in 2003 and then had the agony of losing in two finals in a row, in 2007 and 2011, first to Australia and then India.

Their last World Cup was in 2019, which offered few highlights, as the Sri Lankans finished 6th on the table, with just three wins from their nine matches.

Qualification for 2023

The Netherlands and Sri Lanka won their ticket to the World Cup after ending first and second in the qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe in June and July. Sri Lanka topped the group stages with the Netherlands in second place, with Sri Lanka winning the final between the two sides by 128 runs.
