There’s only pride and places to play for, but Afghanistan are sure to throw everything at it after a frustrating tournament in which they played some excellent cricket. I don’t see any chance for Canada, who have suffered three big losses in their group matches.

Afghanistan lost out to New Zealand in their first match after posting over 180, and forced South Africa to a second Super Over before losing their second match. After those disappointments they picked up their first win of the tournament, beating the UAE by five wickets.

An incredible bowling performance from Azmatullah Omarzai (4/15, econ 3.75) restricted the UAE to 160/9 off their 20 overs. Mujeeb Ur Rahman (2/31, econ 7.75) offered great support, with the two opening bowlers knocking over all six of the UAE’s top-order batters.

Afghanistan made heavy weather of their run chase after losing three wickets for 70 inside 10 overs. Ibrahim Zadran (53 off 41) kept his side on track for the win, but it was four sixes from the pair of Darwish Rasooli (33 off 23) and Azmatullah Omarzai (40* off 21) that helped Afghanistan sneak home with four balls to spare.

Canada Form

Canada followed up a 57-run defeat to South Africa with a five-wicket defeat to the UAE. Their last match was an eight-wicket thrashing by New Zealand with almost five overs to spare.

Harsh Thaker had put together two good scores in his previous two matches (33 and 50) but was only needed for the last nine balls against New Zealand, thanks to a super century from Yuvraj Samra. The opener scored 110 off 65 balls, putting on an opening stand off 116 with Dilpreet Bajwa (36) as Canada posted 173/4 off their 20 overs.

New Zealand brushed the Canadian attack aside on their way to an eight-wicket win. Saad Bin Zafar took 1/29 on the back of a fine bowling performance against the UAE, when he picked up 3/14. Dilon Heyliger (1/42) took the other New Zealand wicket to fall.

Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan was delighted to finally pick up a win in the World Cup. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Khan said that it was always important to have a win at the World Cup.

“We bowled really well in the last 10 overs - we missed our lines earlier and they played well. First 10 overs we didn't bowl as good as we should have. Need to improve in the first 10 overs and be more consistent,” said Khan.

Speaking to the press after his side’s third defeat on the bounce, Canada’s captain, Dilpreet Bajwa, paid tribute to Yuvraj Samra’s superb century against New Zealand.

"Hats off to Yuvraj. Very proud moment for him, and for all Canadians, to have a 100-run partnership against one of the biggest teams. We need more cricket against these big nations. Now we're competing, but if we get more experience, we can beat them. We beat Ireland in the last World Cup,” said Bajwa.
