West Indies vs Sri Lanka 2nd T20I Predictions - Hope and King to power Windies to series win

Editor
Last updated: 2 hours ago

The West Indies are favored to win against Sri Lanka in the upcoming T20I, with warm weather likely to benefit their pace attack initially before spinners come into play. Key players Shai Hope and Jason Holder are predicted to perform well, with recent form backing their potential. For Sri Lanka, Kamindu and Kusal Mendis hold batting promise, while Wanindu Hasaranga remains a threat with the ball. With both squads named, the key recommendation is to back West Indies, and expect star performances from Hope, Holder, and Hasaranga.

West Indies vs Sri Lanka Predictions

Sunday looks set for temperatures in the 30s, which will add some early pace and bounce to the hosts' attack, although as the pitch dries in the sun it will offer grip for the spinners. In warm weather the pitch is true and consistent, which will make the West Indies’ top order even more effective.

  • West Indies’ Shai Hope scored 65* off 54 balls in the 1st T20I against Sri Lanka.
  • West Indies’ Roston Chase has scored 84, 24 & 33 in his last 5 innings.
  • West Indies’ Jason Holder took 3/18 (econ 4.50) against Sri Lanka.
  • Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis scored 51 off 39 balls against the West Indies.
  • Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis has scored 41, 72 and 36 in his last 4 innings.
  • Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga has taken 11 wickets in his last seven innings.

Head-to-Head

West Indies have won two and lost three of their last five T20Is against Sri Lanka.

West Indies Form

The West Indies lost their previous two T20Is in the recent World Cup against South Africa and eventual champions India before bouncing back with a win in the 1st T20I against Sri Lanka.

Shai Hope has scored 32, 56 and 65* in his last three innings and is backed to be in the runs in the 2nd T20I. Rovman Powell has put together scores of 40, 29 and 10* in his last three innings.

Jason Holder (3/18) and Shamar Joseph (3/29) were the destroyers-in-chief for the West Indies. Holder has figures of 2/39, 2/27 and 3/18 in his last four matches, while Joseph has returned 2/64, 2/26, 2/86 and 3/29 in his last six innings.

Sri Lanka Form

Sri Lanka have lost their last five T20Is on the bounce, with four of those defeats being by big margins.

Kamindu Mendis hit six boundaries in his half-century in the 1st T20I, but Dasun Shanaka (22), Pathum Nissanka (18) and Kusal Mendis (36) were the only other batters to score more than four runs in the innings. Kusal Mendis has scored 36-plus in three of his last four innings, while Pathum Nissanka has scores of 19, 50, 79 and 18 in his last four knocks.

Wanindu Hasaranga took 2/32 (econ 8.00) in the 1st T20I on the back of figures of 3/25 and 1/43 in his previous two matches. Eshan Malinga (1/26) took the other West Indies wicket to fall and has figures of 1/26, 2/33 and 1/40 in his previous three matches.

Team news

Jason Holder was named Player of the Match after the 1st T20I for his figures of 3/18, including knocking over two of Sri Lanka’s top three batters.

“I knew what length I had to bowl. I thought the pitch was a bit two-paced. I think it depends on the situation and after getting two wickets in two balls, it really set it up. I try to understand the situation and keep the stumps in play. I try to understand the conditions to be a step ahead of the opposition,” said Holder in his post-match interview.

Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis admitted that losing wickets in the powerplay had set his side back.

“Batting in the powerplay we lost wickets and then struggled but Dasun and Kamindu batted well. We struggled in the powerplay with the ball, but after the powerplay they bowled really, really well,” said Mendis.

“It's a great confidence-booster to start the series well. We wanted to win more comfortably in the end, but a win is a win. See, we need to trust our ability against spin and back our execution,” said West Indies skipper Shai Hope.
