The final draw for the 2026/27 CAF Confederation Cup group stage has taken place in Egypt, with Durban City discovering their opponents for the next phase of the competition.

The Citizens are South Africa’s only representatives in the competition after Kaizer Chiefs suffered an early elimination against Zambia’s Red Arrows, losing 3-2 on penalties after the second leg ended 1-0 in their favour.

How Durban City Made History

Durban City, meanwhile, secured qualification for the group stage for the first time in their history, defeating Mauritian side Port Louis 6-1 on aggregate to book their place among Africa’s leading clubs.

A 3-1 win at home was followed by a 3-0 second-leg victory in Mauritius last Sunday. Eric Tinkler's side were dominant throughout the tie.

Kaizer Chiefs Elimination Leaves Durban City As Sole South African Hope

Chiefs’ early elimination is another setback for South African football, with Amakhosi failing to reach the group stages after a disappointing continental campaign. Despite winning the return leg through Bradley Cross’s second-half header, they could not overturn the first-leg deficit and were ultimately eliminated in the penalty shootout.

With Chiefs out, Durban City will carry the country’s hopes in the competition. Eric Tinkler’s side face a challenging group featuring Moroccan heavyweights AS FAR, Tanzanian outfit Azam FC and Libya’s Al Ahli Tripoli.

The Citizens will be looking to make the most of their historic qualification as they prepare to test themselves against established continental opposition.
