English Championship Predictions - Round 11

Bristol City vs Sheffield United

Bristol City have been difficult to predict, following a 1-0 win against Watford with a 1-1 draw at Charlton and a 1-0 home loss to Blackburn. Scott Twine scored their equaliser from the penalty spot against Charlton, but goals have not flowed consistently.

Sheffield United have also endured contrasting results: Patrick Bamford struck twice and Tahith Chong scored in a 3-0 defeat of Lincoln, only for the Blades to lose 3-2 at Portsmouth four days later. Both teams enter this contest with questions to answer defensively or in attack. A draw or a narrow away win for Bristol is plausible, with both teams to score an alternative market worth assessing though the payout will be low.

Southampton vs Bolton Wanderers

Southampton have put together consecutive 1-0 Championship wins, seeing off Portsmouth in the south coast derby before edging Norwich away. James Bree scored the derby winner, and the Saints have now kept two clean sheets in succession.

Bolton present a different challenge after a dramatic 4-3 victory at Norwich and a 3-1 away win against Wolves, separated by a 2-1 home defeat to Stoke. Wanderers’ attackers will need to challenge Southampton’s improving defence, while the hosts will aim to protect their recent momentum.

Southampton to win is the natural lean, but a low-scoring home victory or an under-goals selection deserves consideration.

West Bromwich Albion vs Blackburn Rovers

West Brom halted a difficult spell with a 2-1 victory at Wrexham on Tuesday, after losing 1-0 to Birmingham and 1-0 at Wolves. Isaac Price and Aune Selland Heggebo both struck late to turn the Wrexham match around, giving the Baggies a timely lift.

Blackburn travel to The Hawthorns after consecutive wins against Cardiff (2-1) and away to Bristol City (1-0). Andri Gudjohnsen and Todd Cantwell scored against Cardiff, while Rovers’ recent results suggest resilience in close matches. Neither side looks like an obvious high-scoring favourite. A tight contest is likely, making the draw and under 2.5 goals useful markets to compare before choosing a bet.

Wrexham vs Preston North End

Wrexham return home after a 1-1 draw at Derby and a 2-1 defeat to West Brom. Ollie Rathbone scored a late equaliser against Derby, while Kieffer Moore put Wrexham ahead against the Baggies before they conceded twice late on.

Preston arrive with worrying momentum having drawn 2-2 at Queens Park Rangers before successive defeats to Millwall (1-0) and Birmingham (4-0). The heavy loss at Birmingham exposed defensive weaknesses that Wrexham will hope to exploit but the hosts have also found it difficult to protect a lead.

Wrexham have the more encouraging recent attacking moments so a home win appeals but both teams to score offers a slightly better payout.

Verdict

I’m backing wins for Bristol City and Southampton, a tight draw between West Brom and Blackburn, while my eye is set on goals for Wrexham and Preston in a home win.
