Since November 2024, Royal AM have been under SA Revenue Service (SARS) curatorship. This is due to a tax bill of R40 million not being paid by owner and businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize.

The club also owe a hefty R12 million to former striker Samir Nurkovic after unfair dismissal. FIFA ruled in that case and Royal AM have been under a transfer ban for several windows.

All Royal AM players are now free agents

According to the Football Union of South Africa (FUSA) secretary Taelo Motloung, the decision to expel Royal AM means that their entire squad are now free agents.

“The termination of Royal AM's club membership by the Premier Soccer League will result in the automatic termination of contracts for all employees, including players.

"All players will become free agents. This means they will be unrestricted and able to sign with any team at any time, without any contractual obligations to Royal AM.”

Many of the squad have already found new homes. Sabelo Sithole, Ayabulela Maxwele and Shadrack Kobedi have joined Golden Arrows. Sbangani Zulu and Mfundo Thikazi have moved to Richards Bay and Khulekani Shezi has signed for Sekhukhune United.

Three Offers Were Made for Royal AM

After SARS took ownership of the club in an attempt to recoup a tax debt of around R15 million, offers were welcomed for the club. All of those fell through in the end.

Edward Modise, who reportedly owns the naming right of Bloemfontein Celtic, offered R45 million for Royal AM but he missed the deposit deadline.

Eugene Botha proposed a purchase price of R15 million, which was rejected out of hand.

Durban businessman Roy Moodley saw his company fail to deposit the money by the agreed time.

Results Expunged

All of Royal AM’s 11 results in the league this season will be cancelled. The 15 remaining teams will finish the season on 28 matches.

Clubs like Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows are amongst those who have lost three points, after beating Royal AM earlier this season.
