Bangladesh vs Zimbabwe ODI Predictions - Tanzid Hasan to overpower Zim attack

Editor
Last updated: 40 minutes ago

Bangladesh and Zimbabwe face off in a closely anticipated ODI clash. Bangladesh enters with Litton Das returning as captain and benefit from a deeper squad, particularly in their spin and pace options. Although Zimbabwe secured a 2-1 ODI series win over Bangladesh in July, the latter’s long-term head-to-head record and squad depth tip the balance in their favour. Key players like Tanzid Hasan and Towhid Hridoy will be crucial for Bangladesh, while Sikandar Raza leads Zimbabwe’s challenge. The article concludes that Bangladesh’s extra bowling options give them the edge.

Bangladesh vs Zimbabwe Predictions

Bangladesh have greater depth in their spin and pace options and the more impressive long-term ODI head-to-head record. Zimbabwe’s July series win makes this no formality but Litton Das’s return and the extra bowling options tip the balance towards Bangladesh.

  • Bangladesh's Tanzid Hasan has scored 94, 58 & 66* in his last 6 ODIs
  • Bangladesh's Towhid Hridoy has scored 350* & 43 in his last 3 innings.
  • Bangladesh’s Shoriful Islam has figures of 4/44 & 7/48 in his last 3 innings.
  • Bangladesh have won 52 of their 84 completed ODIs against Zimbabwe, losing 32.
  • Zimbabwe's Sikandar Raza has scored 57, 45, 81* & 50* in his last 7 innings.
  • Zimbabwe's Ben Curran averages 42.33 in ODIs, with 2 centuries in 14 innings.
  • Zimbabwe’s Brad Evans has taken 13 wickets in his last 5 innings.

Head-to-Head

Bangladesh lead 52-32 against Zimbabwe after 84 completed ODIs but the latter won the first two ODIs in their recent series in July. Bangladesh bounced back to win the third and final ODI by seven wickets.

Bangladesh Form

Bangladesh ended July’s three-match ODI series in Zimbabwe with a seven-wicket victory after losing the first two encounters. Tanzid Hasan’s 94 was an important batting contribution during a difficult trip.

Litton Das is back as captain with Towhid Hridoy his deputy. Their middle order can lean on Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mehidy Hasan Miraz for big runs while Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman and Hasan Mahmud strengthen a varied bowling attack that will challenge the Zimbabwe batters.

Zimbabwe Form

Zimbabwe will take confidence from their 2-1 ODI series victory over Bangladesh in July, although they lost the final match of the series. Sikandar Raza leads a side featuring international talent in the form of Brian Bennett, Ben Curran, Craig Ervine and Brendan Taylor.

Raza’s all-round abilities will be crucial as Zimbabwe look to get off to a flying start in this tri-series while Ryan Burl is another potential source of middle-order runs along with his tight spin bowling. Blessing Muzarabani is the leading pace threat and will be ably supported by Brad Evans and Newman Nyamhuri. Evans will be the main wicket-taking threat after picking up 13 wickets in his last five matches.

Team News

Bangladesh are without Nahid Rana because of a side strain while Litton Das and Mustafizur Rahman have returned to the squad for the tournament. Off-spinner Aliss Al Islam has earned a maiden ODI call-up for the series.

Zimbabwe will be without dangerman Richard Ngarava who is recovering from a back injury and they have included Tafadzwa Tsiga and Vincent Masekesa in their series squad.

Bangladesh (possible XI): Tanzid Hasan, Soumya Sarkar, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Litton Das (c), Towhid Hridoy, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mosaddek Hossain, Rishad Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud.

Zimbabwe (possible XI): Brian Bennett, Ben Curran, Craig Ervine, Brendan Taylor, Sikandar Raza (c), Ryan Burl, Wessly Madhevere, Brad Evans, Wellington Masakadza, Blessing Muzarabani, Newman Nyamhuri.

Verdict

I'm backing Shoriful Islam to be in the wickets for Bangladesh and Towhid Hridoy to make important runs.

Sikandar Raza is Zimbabwe's most in-form batter while Brad Evans has been taking wickets in each of his last five matches.
