Ireland vs Afghanistan 4th ODI Predictions - Afghanistan to clinch series over Ireland

Editor
Last updated: 1 hour ago

Afghanistan head into the upcoming cricket match as clear favourites, largely due to Rashid Khan’s red-hot bowling form—he’s tipped to take three or more wickets for the fourth game running. Ireland’s batsmen, especially the top order, continue to struggle against Khan’s spin. Key performers expected to stand out include Andy Balbirnie for Ireland and Rahmanullah Gurbaz for Afghanistan as top batters, with Gavin Hoey expected to impress for Ireland in the wickets column. Afghanistan's overall dominance is the main storyline.

  • Ireland have lost their last three ODIs
  • Afghanistan won back-to-back matches to take a 2-0 series lead.
  • There is a likelihood of rain through the day, making the toss an important factor for both sides who will both prefer to chase a total.

Ireland vs Afghanistan Predictions

After a big defeat in the 2nd ODI, Ireland managed to nip seven Afghanistan wickets but lost with 31 balls to spare.

  • Ireland’s Andy Balbirnie has scored 53, 102* & 36 in his last 4 knocks.
  • Ireland’s Cade Carmichael has scores of 29, 62 & 32 in his last 4 innings.
  • Ireland’s Gavin Hoey took 4/34 in the 3rd ODI.
  • Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz has scored 65, 42, 32 & 71 in his last 5 matches.
  • Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran has scores of 95 & 84 in his last 4 innings.
  • Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan has taken 14 wickets in his last 3 matches.

Head-to-Head

Afghanistan have won three of the last five matches between the two sides, with the other two matches both rained-off.

Ireland Form

Ireland were hit for their third ODI defeat on the bounce in the 3rd ODI, being bowled out for 206 off 46.3 overs. Four Irish batters made it past 30 but it was No 9 Gavin Hoey who top-scored with a resolute 36 off 67 balls. Jai Moondra (31 off 33) added 76 for the ninth wicket with Hoey to spare Ireland’s blushes.

Mark Adair picked up 2/36 at just 3.60 runs to the over in a brave attempt to restrain the Afghanistan batters, but the star of the Irish attack was Gavin Hoey, who knocked over four of Afghanistan’s top six batter for just 34 runs (econ 3.40), but it wasn’t enough to prevent defeat with more than five overs to spare.

Afghanistan Form

Afghanistan took a 2-0 lead in the series after beating their hosts by three wickets with five overs to spare. AM Ghazanfar (3/29) and Rashid Khan (3/44) ripped through the Irish top order to roll them for 206.

Afghanistan raced to the win with 31 balls to spare, although they had a late stutter as they lost four wickets for 44 runs before Rashid Khan guided them home with an undefeated 37 off 43 balls. Opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz hit five sixes in a 77-ball 71 that laid the foundation for the win.

Team news

Ireland’s top order again failed to get stuck in, so they might look to bring in fresh talent or shuffle their order in a bid to fight to square the series with two ODIs to play.

Ireland (possible XI): Andrew Balbirnie, Paul Stirling (c), Caden Carmichael, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Curtis Campher, Benjamin Calitz, Mark Adair, Gavin Hoey, Jai Moondra, Byron McDonough.

Afghanistan (possible XI): Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Sediqullah Atal, Rahmat Shah (c), Hashmatullah Shahidi, Azmatullah Omarzai, Rashid Khan, Darwish Rasooli, Allah Ghazanfar, Mohammad Safi, Fazalhaq Farooqi.

Verdict

Afghanistan are overwhelming favourites to win, with Rashid Khan backed to take three or more wickets in an innings for the fourth match in a row as Ireland’s top order struggles to get to grips with him.

Andy Balbirnie, Gavin Hoey and Rahmanullah Gurbaz are also packed to pull out good performances for their sides.
