New Zealand vs Sri Lanka Women Predictions

New Zealand have a powerful side and the West Indies only managed to beat them off the second last ball of their opening match. They should be far too strong for a Sri Lankan side that has some individual talent but that struggles to be competitive against the top-ranked sides.

  • New Zealand Women’s Melie Kerr has scored 51* & 61 in her last 3 innings.
  • New Zealand Women’s Sophie Devine has scored 87, 28 & 22 in her last 4 knocks.
  • New Zealand Women’s Jess Kerr took 2/17 (econ 4.25) against the West Indies.
  • Sri Lanka Women’s Chamari Athapaththu scored 32-plus in 7 of her last 9 knocks.
  • Sri Lanka Women’s Harshitha Samarawickrama has scored 27, 57* & 63* in 5 knocks.
  • Sri Lanka Women’s Malki Madara has taken 5 wickets in her last 5 matches.

Head-to-Head

New Zealand Women have won two and lost two of their last five T20Is against Sri Lanka Women. The last match ended in a tie, with New Zealand winning the previous clash by seven wickets.

New Zealand Women Form

Two of New Zealand’s top three failed to reach double figures but the rest of the top-order made good contributions as they posted 162/6 off their 20 overs against the West Indies. Jess Kerr was the only bowler to pick up wickets as the West Indies completed a seven-wicket win with one ball to spare.

Melie Jerr has three half-centuries in her last eight innings, but failed to get out of double figures in her other five knocks. Maddy Green has scored 56*, 19* & 35 in her last four matches. Sophie Devine has been in good form with the bat, while Brooke Halliday top-scored with 40 against the West Indies on the back of an innings of 21 against South Africa in their last warm-up match.

Jess Kerr has figures of 2/21 and 2/17 in her last two matches, while Nensi Patel has taken 2/25, 1/7 and 4/18 in her last five matches.

Sri Lanka Women Form

Sri Lanka Women’s five-match winning streak was ended in their World Cup opener with a thumping 87-run defeat at the hands of co-hosts England.

Chamari Athapaththu failed to fire against England after coming into the match with scores of 39, 32, 40, 32, 42, 41 and 94 in her previous eight innings. Harshitha Samarawickrama scored 29-plus in three of her last four completed innings and Vishmi Gunaratne has two undefeated half-centuries in her last four innings. Nilakshika Silva top-scored with 39 off 33 balls against England, while Hansima Karunaratne scored 54* in their last warm-up match against the Netherlands.

Sugandika Kumari has figures of 2/22, 1/33 and 1/26 in her last four matches, while Malki Madara has taken 2/31, 1/19, 1/12 and 1/51 in her last five matches, including the only England wicket to fall in their opener in the World Cup.

Team news

Both sides need a big improvement over their opening match in the World Cup, with Sri Lanka’s bowlers having been particularly exposed against England. The Rose Bowl favours sides batting first and the weather report will encourage captains to bat first as it looks like a sunny and clear day with no chance of rain, so it’s best to put the runs on the board.

New Zealand Women (possible XI): Amelia Kerr (c), Georgia Plimmer, Isabella Gaze, Sophie Devine, Brooke Halliday, Maddy Green, Izzy Sharp, Jess Kerr, Nensi Patel, Rosemary Mair, Bree Illing.

Sri Lanka Women (possible XI): Vishmi Rajapaksha Gunaratne, Chamari Athapaththu (c), Imesha Dulani, Harshitha Samarawickrama, Hansima Karunaratne, Kavisha Dilhari, Nilakshi de Silva, Kaushani Nuthyangana, Sugandika Kumari, Malki Madara, Mithali Ayodhya.

Verdict

New Zealand are tipped to win at odds of 1.25, with Jess Kerr, Sophie Devine, Chamari Athapaththu and Malki Madara backed to star with bat and ball.
