T20 Cricket World Cup - A look back at South Africa's journey at the 2024 T20 Cricket World Cup

India emerged victorious in the T20 World Cup 2024, overcoming South Africa in a gripping final. After a challenging start, India managed 176/7 with Kohli's 76 as a standout performance. South Africa seemed poised with 151/4 at 16 overs, but India's impeccable bowling reversed fortunes, ending South Africa's hopes at 169/8. The tournament saw Rahmanullah Gurbaz leading in runs, and Fazalhaq Farooqi and Arshdeep Singh topping wickets, setting a new record.

Favourites unbeaten in group stages


India, Australia, the West Indies and South Africa all won their groups without losing a match. India won three of their four matches, with their match against Canada being rained-off. 

South Africa top Group D


South Africa started their tournament by routing Sri Lanka for 77 to win by six wickets. They then restricted Netherlands for 103/9 off their 20 overs, David Miller scoring 59* as South Africa won by four wickets with seven balls to spare. Bangladesh gave the proteas some nervy moments before losing by just four runs in a thrilling final over. In their final group match South Africa pulled off a dramatic 1-run win over a Nepal side that lost all three of their completed matches in the tournament.  

Super 8 stage


India won all three of their Super 8 Group 1 matches by healthy margins, including beating Australia in their last match to knock one of the favourites out of the tournament. South Africa also won all three of the Super 8 Group 2 matches in three fairly tight matches, the last of which eliminated hosts the West Indies

Semi-finals


South Africa demolished Afghanistan for just 56 runs off 11.5 overs on the way to a nine-wicket win off 8.5 overs. Tabraiz Shamsi picked up 3/6 off less than two overs. India posted an impressive 171/7 off their 20 overs before routing England for 103 to complete a 68-run victory.

The final


India recovered from 34/3 to post 176/7 off their 20 overs. Opener Virat Kohli played one of the innings of the tournament, hitting two sixes in his 59-ball 76. He was supported by Axar Patel (47 off 31, 4 sixes) and Shivam Dube (27 off 16). Anrich Nortje (2/26, econ 6.50) and Keshav Maharaj (2/23, econ 7.66) starred with the ball for the Proteas. 

The Proteas were well-placed at 70/2 in the ninth over but had lost Quinton de Kock (39 off  31) and Tristan Stubbs (31 off 21) by mid-way through the 13th over (106/4). Heinrich Klaasen scored an amazing 52 off 27 balls (5 sixes) and David Miller (21 off 17) to put the Proteas on the brink of a first World Cup title. From a position of 151/4 after 16 overs, they were tripped up by great bowling from India and some loose strokes to end on 169/8 off their 20 overs, for India to secure a second T20 World Cup title.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz of Afghanistan was the leading run-scorer in the 2024 tournament (281 runs, 8 innings).

Most wickets in the tournament


Fazalhaq Farooqi of Afghanistan and Arshdeep Singh of India were the leading wicket-takers in the T20 World Cup Both took 17 wickets in the 2024 tournament, which was a record for the most wickets in a T20 World Cup.
