New Zealand vs India 2nd ODI Predictions - Kohli to crack Kiwi attack again

Editor
Last updated: 12 minutes ago

India are tipped to win the 2nd ODI against New Zealand, following a dominant performance in the first match. Virat Kohli is expected to continue his strong batting form, while Kuldeep Yadav is favoured to take wickets again. New Zealand are without Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman for the series, and Devon Conway missed the first ODI due to a concussion in training. These absences could impact New Zealand's chances, making India the preferred selection for the upcoming fixture.

New Zealand vs India Predictions

New Zealand have been scoring big runs thanks to Glenn Phillips' superb form, but India are producing superior results with bat and ball, so they are the obvious side to back for the win.

  • New Zealand's Glenn Phillips has scored 70, 107, 65* & 30 in 5 innings.
  • New Zealand's Tim Seifert has scored 93 & 38 in his last 2 knocks.
  • New Zealand's Jacob Duffy took 3/49 against India in the 1st ODI.
  • India's Virat Kohli has scored 74, 139*, 29 & 74 in his last 5 knocks.
  • India's Shubman Gill has scored 110, 223* & 37 in his last 5 innings.
  • India's Arshdeep Singh took 4/70 in the 1st ODI.
  • India have won 3 of their last 5 ODIs against New Zealand.

Head-to-Head

India lead this series 1-0 after their five-wicket DLS win in Auckland. They have won three of the last five ODIs they have played against New Zealand.

New Zealand Form

After winning the last two matches of the T20I series New Zealand came in to the 1st ODI full of confidence only to be shattered by a superb performance from the India bowlers.

Tim Seifert top-scored with 38 off 43 balls, backed up by Glenn Phillips (30 off 51) and Daryl Mitchell (28 off 41) as they were bowled out for 185. Blair Tickner hit four sixes at the end of the innings in scoring 34 off 23 balls.

The bowlers were always going to struggle to defend that total against a strong India batting line-up, but a rain interruption made their task even tougher and they went down by five wickets with 10 overs to spare. Jacob Duffy was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers, taking 3/49.

India Form

After leading the T20I series 3-0 India eased off the gas and the series ended at 3-2. With some ODI specialists brought in for the series they annihilated New Zealand's top order in the 1st ODI, rolling them for 185 in the 41st over.

Arshdeep Singh (4/70) was the destroyer-in-chief, with Anshul Kamboj (2/22) and  Gurnoor Brar (3/44) playing their part in squeezing New Zealand out of the match.

Chasing a relatively small target India lost Rohit Sharma for a duck in the first over, after which Virat Kohli (74 off 51) and Shubman Gill (37 off 56) added 114 for the second wicket to setup the win chasing a rain-reduced target of 143 off 32 overs. The winning runs came off just 22/4 overs.

Team News

New Zealand are without Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman for the ODI series, while Devon Conway and Matt Henry both missed the opener through injury. India are without Prasidh Krishna but the rest of their squad is built around a strong batting core along with plenty of pace and spin in the bowling department.

New Zealand (possible XI): Tim Seifert, Will Young, Henry Nicholls, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Tom Latham, Mitchell Santner (c), Michael Bracewell, Nathan Smith, Jacob Duffy, Matt Henry.

India (possible XI): Shubman Gill (c), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Axar Patel, Naman Dhir, Anshul Kamboj, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav.

Verdict

I'm backing India to ride the wave of their dominant performance in the 1st ODI to beat New Zealand in the second match of the series. Virat Kohli is my choice to keep scoring big runs while Kuldeep Yadav is my best pick for getting among the wickets once again.
