Bafana Bafana Quarter Linked with High Profile Transfers - Mbokazi Tipped for Chicago Fire Exit
Four South African footballers—Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Teboho Mokoena, Yaya Sithole, and Relebohile Mofokeng—have become transfer targets following standout performances at the FIFA World Cup 2026. European and Middle Eastern clubs are circling, with clubs in France, Italy, and Saudi Arabia expressing interest. Traditionally, South African talent has faced barriers to moves abroad, such as higher local salaries and work permit issues. However, the national team's recent World Cup success is expected to increase overseas transfers for these promising players.

Mbokazi Earning Rave Reviews
Left centre back Mbekezeli Mbokazi only signed for Chicago Fire in January for $3 million. He is already being tipped for a move to a Big Five league in Europe.
Both Lens and Strasbourg have been linked in France, whilst there are murmurs that new AC Milan coach Ruben Amorim could be interested.
Mokoena Moving to Saudi?
Teboho Mokoena has long been linked with a move away from Mamelodi Sundowns. His outstanding display against the Czech Republic caught the eyes of many clubs' Sporting Directors.
According to Asharq Al-Awsat, both Al-Taawoun and Al-Ettifaq are keen to sign Mokoena. A stumbling block could be the high price tag on his head from Sundowns.
"Yaya" Sithole Available
Despite struggling vs Mexico, Sithole excelled against South Korea.
After his Portuguese club, CD Tondela were relegated, Sithole has been linked with Venezia, Monza and Troyes.
Mofokeng to Finally be Sold?
The last player who looks certain to move to Europe is Relebohile Mofokeng. The Orlando Pirates playmaker had a trial in the past at Wolves and has been linked with Monaco.
Further offers are said to be forthcoming from Lens, Malaga CF, Racing Santander and Club Brugge.
Why South African Footballers Don't Move Abroad
There are a number of reasons for this. The salaries in the South African PSL are often significantly higher than those in smaller European leagues.
South African players often struggle to get work permits to play in Europe, or the language barrier is a factor. This is not the case for French-speaking players from West Africa.
The lack of success from the South African national team is another factor. It is hoped that reaching the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup 2026 will see many players attract transfers to clubs in Europe, the Middle East, or the MLS.
