Head to Head
South Africa have won five of their last six ODI matches against Sri Lanka. It the first ODI of this series it was however Sri Lanka who came out on top by 14 runs.
Sri Lanka Form
Sri Lanka came into this ODI series in horrid form having won only two of their previous 11 50-over matches. That however changed in Colombo as Sri Lanka beat South Africa by 14 runs in the 1st ODI.
Batting first the hosts posted 300 in their 50 overs. Avishka Fernando continued his fine form by scoring 118 runs at more than a run a ball. Dhananjaya de Silva managed 44 runs while Charith Asalanka scored 72 runs.
On a wicket that favoured the spin bowlers, Akila Dananjaya took 2-65 to ensure South Africa only reached 286 in their 50 overs.
Sri Lanka Team News
Kusal Perera did not feature in the 1st ODI but could return in place of Bhanuka Rajapaksa. No other changes are expected.
South Africa Form
After a disappointing 1-1 series draw against Ireland, South Africa would have hoped to get this series off to a good start. Unfortunately they suffered a 14-run defeat in a match where they looked on course for victory.
It started with a poor bowling effort by the Proteas as Sri Lanka went on to score 300 runs. Keshav Maharaj was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2-30 in 10 overs. Star bowlers, Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje were however very expensive.
The run chase began well with Aiden Markram scoring 96 runs. Janneman Malan’s form looked like it would continue until he was trapped LBW on 23 runs.
Rassie van der Dussen scored 59 to put South Africa on track for the win, but once he was dismissed they fell too far behind the scoring rate. In the end they fell 14 runs short.
South Africa Team News
South Africa’s balance in the 1st ODI was not right but whether they will rectify that in the 2nd ODI remains to be seen. They were always a batsman short so Reeza Hendricks could come in, or Wiaan Mulder who offers something with bat and ball.
